PeterF Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Some time ago my buddy and I go out for a day on the lake. He catches a small LM on a crank bait and while removing the treble hooks the fish goes crazy and one of the treble hooks ends up deep in his thumb. The point of the hook was real close to the back of his nail. After looking at it was obvious there was only one way for that hook to come out, the same way it cam in. Get this image, he has one hook in his thumb then there's the crank bait and the fish is still on the bait. He looks at me at tells me take it out but whatever you do DON'T STOP! And like a good friend, I said don't worry, I'll get it out. Besides the birth of my kids, removing a hook from deep inside his thumb brought me great pleasure. ;D The hook came out and after a 10 minute break he went back to fishing. The other day we were at his house talking about that day and he told me that he had two options. 1.Go to the hospital and have them remove it. 2.Let me rip it out of his thumb. He figured that it would have hurt a whole lot less if he would have gone to the hospital but it would have messed up his fishing day. Now that's a guy that really wants to fish. Til this day he is hoping to repay the favor and remove a hook out of me. Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 6, 2007 Super User Posted June 6, 2007 Hook removal is quite easy with the proper technique, I've used this one on dozens of occasions Quote
NJfishinGuy Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 does that really work? tie a line to the bend and pull? Quote
PeterF Posted June 6, 2007 Author Posted June 6, 2007 That does work but you have to yank the hook out. Faster is better. But if given the chance, I'll take it out with pliers (much more fun) ;D. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted June 6, 2007 Super User Posted June 6, 2007 Your friend is hardcore fisherman! Quote
SDoolittle Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 When my daughter was about 4 years old, she got a hook deep in her finger while playing in the sand on a riverbank. I used the method of putting the line on the bend of the hook and pulled it right out. I don't guess it hurt her too much because she went back to playing and I went back to fishing. Quote
BOOYAH Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 It hurts like heck if the line breaks or slips, but it does work quite well. Quote
demonjd22 Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 ok 2 "points" : on this story. One, my buddy catches double treble hooks to the face from an idiot "former" friend and ends up going to the hospital to have them removed and he had to wait for the plastic surgeon to do it. The 2nd, which i find highly more entertaining, was just this Cinco De Mayo. After a long night of Corona's, Tequila, and daquiri's, late night catfishing turned into early morning bass fishing. So my 2 buddies end up going out, and one catches a treble in the kneecap. He cuts off a patch off his jeans to expose the hook, lays back and has my buddy dump the rest of the daquiri's down his throat, as he ends up cutting out a chunk of his knee, and the hook with a dinky pocketknife. That was dedication in my mind "or stupidity" take your pick ;D Quote
George Welcome Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Removal of hook: the key is maintaining the shank of the hook parallel to the pointl. The person that has the hook in them does that by holding down on the shank. Otherwise, the hook rotates and rips out. That would hurt. Also important is to consider where anyone is hooked to decide on the water or hospital. When in doubt, see a doctor. Quote

Exactly; I will add it all depends on where the hook is located I've refused to remove a hook only once; it was a 12 year old girl with a hook in the corner of her eye and under the bone. When asked if I could help I replied certainly and called a friend who is a Neurosurgeon that was on the lake. Quote
Hot Rod Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 After 30 some years of safe fishing I had the unfortunate need to try out this hook removal technique tonight. Always wondered if it would work like it is supposed to. :-[ I was reorganizing some tackle in the boat when I mistakenly pulled my hand quickly past a jerkbait that was hanking from a compartment lid to dry. Buried one of the bait's #4 trebles down to the bend around the first knuckle in my index finger. I was amazed how painless it was to pop out with the line pull trick. Though I hope I don't have to do that again anytime soon, at least I'll know what to do if it does. The worst part was getting my wife to hold down on the hook's shaft while I popped the line. I thought she was going to pass out. : Quote
