-badhabit- Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 This happened today and is one of those "You ain't gonna believe this sh.." stories. No BS............ after this morning my Airrus Spectra is 6'11" instead of 7'. It was mostly my fault and I'm just going to put a new tip on the rod. I hooked a mudfish that weighed 8 - 9 lbs this morning. It appeared to be barely hooked in the side of the mouth. When I got the fish wore out and next to the boat & to save having to re-tie a new hook (us hicks are lazy) I lowered the rod and tried to shake the hook out. But low and behold that bastage mudfish got a third wind and jumped up and bit the tip off of my rod. It all happened in less than 1 second. All I could do was laugh at my own stupidity and the mudfish's guts. On the good side I caught 18 bass (5 between 6 1/2 lbs and 10 lb 3 oz). (even my camera is wrong...date should be 5-22) Stay tuned for the Next episode of "Gomer got a Boat"..................... ;D Quote
jomatty Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 that is crazy. i dont know what a mudfish is but it sounds like something i dont want to put my hand near. sounds like you had an incredible day though with a lot of big fish. Quote

Mudfish are Bowfin Gar and the meanest fish pound for pound that I know of. Just a nasty azz trash fish that destroy line, lures, and now a rod. After you try to lip one of these they will prob call you lefty They are also called: mud pike, dogfish, grindle, blackfish, cottonfish, swamp bass, & cypress trout in other places. (not my pic) Quote
Gotta Love It Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Sorry about the rod tip! Just for the record, I don't consider myself a hick (I have been called worse) LOL... but I do the same thing when I hook those d**n mudfish! I always hope they fall off before I get them to the boat! Anyway, nice Bass! Quote
JayW Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Sounds like a great day of fishing (except for the mudfish -vs- rod story). Quote
nyumetsu Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Dude Airrus has a lifetime warranty if you kept all your paperwork together when you bought it. I'll bet if you call them they'll replace or repair. I think rods are supposed to take fish bites http://www.rodsbyairrus.com/rods_warranty.html Quote

Since Ken Whiting left Airrus last week things are nuts there. Airrus is now part of Castaway Rods. I did talk to Ken on his cell last Friday and he said to keep an eye out for bigger & better things from him around the time of the next ICAST Show. I had another Airrus Ultra XL that got broke during shipping and the replacement was actually just shipped out to me yesterday. Since they won't have any Ultra XL rods until atleast July I just paid the difference to upgrade to a Puls-R. Until the transition is complete with Castaway I can live with the other being a 1" shorter rod Quote
bass-slayer1 Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 good thing it was not this beast i caught or it would have bit half of your pole off. it weighed 13 pounds and 31 inches long Quote
Guest avid Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 Excellent. The "headless basser" strikes again. I was seriously considering an airrus rod, then I heard that it got bought out by castaway and ken left. I know we haven't heard the last of him, but I wonder if he can start a new company. Most buy-outs usually have a clause about that. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Quote

Headless basser ............... lol avid I'm not headless but you may get a better looking one buying some cabbage at the grocery store You are also welcome to come over and go on one of my dysfunctional adventures anytime. (Timistall hooked a nice double digit bass Friday with me). bass-slayer1 - Nice size fish and I'm sure it fought well. If they didn't tear up everything they get a hold of I wouldn't mind fishing for them a little bit, but right now they are the enemy Could it be another one.................... Quote
