It's just like the discussion about the Zara Spook.  There is no right answer to this.  But I tend to get the best results when I walk this bait.

Walking it. IF you get follows but no bites. Cast it past that spot and twitch is a couple of times let it rest the walk it a little quicker Got my PB on top water that way 8-)

Yeah i seem to agree with everyone here, its kind of too each his own, you vary your twitches like paparock said until the bass tell you what they want, for me it seems id guess the usual 2 twitches and a stop, and then 2 more twitches and stop often works the most for myself

I like to pull it down a bit and let its head go under water during the twitch the pop it up a bit then let it rest. Sorta imitates a really confused baitfish.

i walk the dog at a pretty fast pace...if their missing it or coming up short, ill pause it for a bit in between.....

the spit'n'image is one of my favorite lures because you can catch fish with it no matter how you fish it

Walk the dog. This is a great bait for that application.

I've been surprised by some of the responses to this question, and the earlier thread on the spook. I've never caught a fish on a spook, or this bait, by twitching and pausing. Only dog walking has produced for me. I've caught a lot of fish twitching pop-r's and skitterpops, and their like, and of course on the original twitch bait, the floating Rapala. But never on a cigar bait. But, who said this was an exact science, anyway? I'm certainly no expert.

I was intrigued by the idea of pulling the head under and popping it up. I'm gonna try to remember that one.

Here's a different retrieve I picked up from a guide in Cancun. He had a small hole drilled in the front of the bait, and would fill it about a third of the way up with water. We would then cast, and retrieve it as fast as we could crank the reel. This produced a very erratic action across the top of the water, with an occasional shallow dive. When you paused, it would sink backwards. We caught a lot of barracuda and quite a few grouper on this thing. I experimented with this a couple of years ago, and could not duplicate the action. Maybe it was the difference between saltwater and fresh water. Or, maybe I never found the correct fill level. It's something I drag out and experiment with, when I can't get bit on anything, and, of course, when I remember it. If I ever manage to get it right, I'll let you all know what it took.

Cheers,

GK

This is my all time favorite bait when it comes to topwater walking lures. I have caught some big bass on this bait.

1) A slow pace walk with long pauses between each jerk.

2) A fast pace walk then drag the bait with the rod. When you do this the bait will lay on its side and skip as it skims across the surface. It works great on schoolers smashing bait.

3) Jerk...jerk..jerk.jerk <-the only way I know how to explain it. The bait will change directions before it completes the full glide to one side.

4) Bob the bait if you put a larger hook on the tail of the bait the head sits up. You take your rod and make the nose of the bait smack the water.

5) Change the hooks so that you have a larger heavier wire hook on the front. You got to use fluorocarbon for this when you reel the bait it will swim inches under the water and have a frantic wild swimming action.

6) Sand the bait and change out the front hook to a light wire triple grip hook the bait will glide easier from side to side because it will sit higher on the surface.

Hope that helps :)

There is no set way to fish this bait.  I have always fished it like I fish sammys.  I walk the dog.  If you have never fished a Lucky Craft Sammy that would be a good one to try also.
