Siebert Outdoors Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 This is the first big one of these I have ever caught. it was a bout 3-3.5lbs. Meanest bass I ever caught. Can you guess what it is? Its not as obvious as it seems. Sorry for me not looking wide awake. I caught this bass at midnight last night Quote
edbassmaster Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 It looks like a hybrid...smallmouth/largemouth Quote

Fish Chris Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 Nice fish ! But I'm not convinced it's a hybrid of any kind of cross. I keep saying it, but I don't think too many are listening...... "Coloration should have little, if anything, to do with determing the exact species, among Black bass". AND although hybrids do occur naturally, in many bodies of water, they are not NEAR so common, as one might tend to believe, when many of these so-called hybrids have been determined by coloration alone. ......at least, this is what proffessional biologists tell me..... Super User roadwarrior Posted May 14, 2007 Super User Posted May 14, 2007 Nice fish GMAN, but it looks like a smallmouth to me, too. Although some fish are dramatically striped, I have caught many with no markings what-so-ever. Quote

Although some fish are dramatically striped, I have caught many with no markings what-so-ever. That is one thing that has me baffled on this. I did catch a smallie about 20 min latter. it had the stripes of a typical smallie. But the biggest difference I noticed between the 2 fish was the mouth. The mouth on the fish pictured was bigger then a typical smallie mouth. When closed it was pretty even with the eye of the fish.
