Craw Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Went bass fishing for a couple hours this evening. I was fishing one of my hand tied finesse jigs when this gator hit. I was in my boat, talking to a game warden who was standing on the shore checking another fisherman when...WHAM! They stood there quietly while I played the fish, and gave me the big "thumbs up" once I landed it. I caught a few small bass also, but the musky was definitely the high point of my trip. Quote
edbassmaster Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Awesome fish Craw!! I never caught a musky before, I would have been afraid to grab that one. Nice one!! Quote

tallydude Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Nice! Muskie is #1 on my "dream fish" wish list. I gotta catch one of those one day. Quote
Craw Posted May 10, 2007 Author Posted May 10, 2007 Thanks for the nice comments guys. Check out my left hand in the picture. He got me pretty good with those little razor teeth while I was removing the jig. Oh well...live and learn. Quote

cjensen Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 My wife is from Summersville WV which is about 10 minutes from the New River Gorge Bridge. I've read that the smallmouth fishing around there is awesome. Have you ever been in that area of the New River? We've been talking about taking a trip down there maybe sometime this fall. Southern musky look alot different than the muskie way up here in the upper midwest. Thanks. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Nice Fish Craw! I love the early springtime. That's when you can catch bass and musky in the same area on the same lure at the same time. I got three so far this year on LC jerkbaits (and one that is swimming around somewhere with my $15 jerkbait in his mouth - I wanted to jump in after him after my line broke). What are the measuements on that fish? CJensen, I assume you know all to well about the Summersville police and their speed traps. Do they not have anything else to do, but try and catch speeders? cjensen Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 LC Man, My wife warned me about that during a road trip there a couple years back. I thought she was joking when she told me to just go a couple mph UNDER the speed limit but she was dead serious. One I had never seen so many cops patrolling a small stretch of highway and second...I've never seen so many people being pulled over on that same stretch of road. There was a huge billboard as you came into town that read something along the lines of Welcome to Summersville...The Worlds Biggest Speed Trap...plus a few other choice words. Some local guy paid for the billboard and put it up. Thought that was kinda funny. Quote

You have to be very disgruntled to spend the money on a billboard to warn people about the speedtrap. I have to travel through Sumersville several times a year for work and I hate the fact that you have to slow down to 50mph after travelling 65mph the whole way down. I refuse to ever stop in Summersville for food or gas (it's my little personal way of protest by not contributing to the local economy). Sorry to change the topic of the thread Craw. Quote
Craw Posted May 10, 2007 Author Posted May 10, 2007 The closest I've been to that stretch of the New was a trip to "Bridge Day 06". I know those guided trips you can take through the rough water is probably the way to go for trophy smallie fishing at its finest. I've always wanted to book a trip through the gorge. My knowledge of this wonderful river system is limited to the area where I was born and raised. Specifically Radford, and the New River Valley. Quote
cjensen Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Thanks Craw. I checked into a guided trip 2 or 3 years ago but it was gonna run about 250.00 for the day. I was the only one wanting to fish so I backed out. If there had been 2 or 3 others to split cost I would have been all over it. Quote
