nofishforme Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Im so excited....I ordered a mattlures bluegill on 5/2. it should get here anytime now. i was reading around and it seems like there are mixed feelings on adding a treble hook. i fish on a reservoir that has some bass in the 8-10lb range (very few tho) but anything in the 4-7lb range here is considered a "good catch" and is somewhat uncommon. should i add a treble hook and if so what type/size? :) Quote
Super User David P Posted May 8, 2007 Super User Posted May 8, 2007 Do you fish a lot of weeds? I think the reason a lot of people don't use the treb hook is because they don't want to lose a $20 lure.. I think a lot of it depends on what's under the water =) I might be wrong though, I don't fish them, but from what I've seen that's what it sounds like. Quote
Randall Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 I don't add one because fish eat the whole bait most of the time. I am usually fishing for big fish with it so if it can't eat it it isn't worth catching ;D. I have caught two pounders on it without the treble. Quote
Guest avid Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Mattlures is an active poster so I hesitate to comment when the man himself is sure to chime in, but I never add a treble hook. Reason? because the secret to the bait is that it will rest on the bottom in a nose down position. You can fish the lure like a swimbait, but I believe the magic is in letting actually work the bottom. in Florida any exposed hook is an invitation to weed fouling, but the belly mounted treble is completely out of the question. The bait is not so big that a decent sized bass can't get the hook in his mouth on the first strike. but if you have clean bottom - well the more hooks the better I guess. good luck and have fun. avid. edbassmaster Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 I just ordered 2...the 5" male and female bluegill, Im pretty excited with all the hype. I was going to order the 7' 6" Okuma but they are out on their website. Maybe I will check out Dicks. I know swimbaits around here probably arent that productive, but one day I will go to Florida or Ca or Tx or... Quote
