jb_adams Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I love fishing Lucky Strike (Renegade) worms. You know, the ones on the bottom shelf at Wal-Mart for $1.50? They have a very sweet smell to them. Almost like a candy scent. Could that candy-like scent be the reason they work so well for me? If so, I could theoretically make my own scent from things like Kool-Aide (don't laugh) and other things to give plastic worms an attractive scent. Wonder if that would work..sure would beat the smell of garlic. Maybe I could learn to eat garlic bread again! (hahahaha) My favorite! Quote
Super User Muddy Posted October 2, 2008 Super User Posted October 2, 2008 Hey JB: The first worms I remember to do this was the MANNS JELLY WORMS, you can still get them in Grape: Purple Black Brape: Black Marmalade: Motor Oil ' Quote
wisturkeyhunter Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I use 9 inch jelly worms occasionally and they produce pretty well and the smell of them makes it that much better. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Super User Posted October 2, 2008 One you guys ought to try is Chomper's 4" DS worm. This thing will fill your boat with the GARLIC smell! Awful stuff! But it sure catches smallies! Quote

Super User Muddy Posted October 2, 2008 Super User Posted October 2, 2008 I thought the question was about SWEET SMELLING WORMS! Any way if you want to talk garlic and smallies 4 inch *** ***, Shimmer Shad:Wacky Rigged on a 2/0 Circle hook dipped in JJ's Magic. I think the Smallies in the Little Scuhykill River in PA must be Italian, because they slam these Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted October 2, 2008 Super User Posted October 2, 2008 I like the smell of renegade worms....it's almost like a grape soda smell Quote

Super User Catt Posted October 2, 2008 Super User Posted October 2, 2008 Here's a little secret buy those Renegade worms in black with the silver glitter then use them at night T-rigged and you will be surprised at the big bass they will catch. I call em my do nothing worms, cause they don't do nothing but catch Quote

Funny thing about Renegades, the colors seem to vary depending on what part of the country you are in. In North Arkansas I can get up to 6 colors. If I go to South Arkansas I can get 8 or more and totally different colors. I'll be sure to look for those to add to the selection. Right now, I'm loving Junebug because it works in all water clarity (stained, mud, clear, etc.) Quote
CookieMonst3r Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 I never stopped to look at those, got to pick some up while they're on sale, 68 cents a bag. Quote
Flywatersmallie Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 I never stopped to look at them either. Gonna have to give them a try! I often poke through their $0.97 bin, with the Riverside packs and the YUM samplers while getting dog food and occasionally find something in there. I dont honestly remember ever seeing packs like that, hmmmm.... Maybe they dont carry them at the stores up here (WI)? Will have to keep my eyes peeled for them now! Quote
jb_adams Posted October 3, 2008 Author Posted October 3, 2008 They are made by Luck E Strike. The company is in South Missouri and you can request a catalog and then order direct from them. It's a pretty extensive catalog selection. It's printed on a few sheets of paper but there are tons of colors and all kinds of jig heads, tube jigs, lizards, worms, etc. Here is the website http://www.luckestrike.com/ Here is where you can request a catalog or place an order http://www.buehlersales.com/ Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Charlies Worms, out of FL, scents their baits with a strawberry scent. I only find them in FL, and stock up when I'm down there. I get straight worms and some 8 inch traditional worms. They work as good as anything Zoom puts out. The scents probably don't do anything for the fish, but they smell a heck of a lot better than powerbait, gulp, or chompers. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted October 3, 2008 Super User Posted October 3, 2008 they smell sweet because they are actually just gummi worms. Quote
HopelesslyAddicted Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 they smell sweet because they are actually just gummi worms. Wait a minute you guys use these for bass too? Quote
ghost Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Renegade worms have anise oil on them. That's the reason for the sweet smell. It hides human scents good when you handle the Renegade worms. Anise oil has been around for a long time & have been used since I started fishing in the late 80's. Quote
jb_adams Posted October 4, 2008 Author Posted October 4, 2008 There's a bid debate about anise oil and how it can be harmful to fish or something like that. Garlic scented sprays use anise oil I believe. There are those that swear anise oil is the attractant. Is that about right or am I way off? I remember there being a big discussion (thread) about this a while back. Quote

That's another one of Dr. Keith Jones's misconceptions where in he swears anise oil repels bass which I can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt is absolutely wrong. Quote
