electrikal Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I caught these three smallies on Pickwick Lake on three consecutive stumps 3/24/07. Used a chartreuse spinner bait with willowleaf blades. water temps about 63 degrees. Due to some criticism received on another website concerning Catch & Release stating that I didn't release unless I lived in a lakeside home I would like to add that I live on Spring Creek 1/2 mile up from the river. The treeline of the creek is visible in the backgrd of the pic with the boat. A quick walk down to the creekside and these big boys were headed home!! (approx 3 miles from catch site) I would like to add that, while I advocate catch & release, I do not oppose keeping occasional fish for the table or trophy. A good article about this very thing is available here at http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/catch_and_release_bass.html. I have been fishing since I was old enough to hold a pole. My father was a founding member of the Tennessee River Bass club in the early 70's prior to the Bassmasters which later absorbed the TRB. Catch & release was indoctrinated at an early age but also tempered with the knowledge that Momma like to eat fish. The panfish (crappie & bream) were the best but absent a good catch an occasional bass was included. I may be blackballed by you guys for my opinion but do look over the above article before criticizing anyone who would say differently. Bass fishing in Pickwick has gone down since the instituting of C&R and could very well be part of the cause. I don't advocate keeping the larger fish (unless trophies) and thank someone for the opportunity to catch these three as I am sure someone had released them in the past. Sorry about the preachin. : Quote
logger Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Nice fish, and welcome to the boards! Did you get the weight on those hawgs? Quote
Cravin Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Beautiful smallies! Sounds like you've had your feathers ruffled. I dont see harm in taking fish occasionally, Although I don't, I figure there are more and more people releasing so I don't think the fish population is being destoyed like it once was. I'm sure you'll find some people here that don't agree with it, but I bet if you post some pics of fish you did release you'll gain points with them. We as a whole need to understand that people take fish, thats why there are slot limits allowing it on many bodies of water. Even if you dont agree with it its a fact. I figure the people in charge of controlling the fish population have a better understanding than me.(I HOPE) It is a touchy subject. anyways....nice fish! Quote
robistro Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 nice fish! I'm headed to pickwick on a trip with some fishing buddies. going to be near bear creek area. hopefully I'll be posting a few pics like the one you have there! Could you give me any fishing tips/advice for this lake? We've never been to this lake before, as we try to hit a new lake every year. Any info would be very much appreciated. Thanks Quote
electrikal Posted April 1, 2007 Author Posted April 1, 2007 There is a good creek channel directly across from the Rose trail dock. If you have a good map it will indicate a couple of old bridges. I have caught some good ones off those with jig & pig. Out in the main river (northside) and upstream a couple of miles are several humps, stumps & submerged islands. (Brush Creek area). Crankbaits & spinners are goodover the submerged stuff. Worms and grubs around visible islands. Quote
