Troutfisher Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 I headed out to my usual fishing hole, a small backwater area of what was once a large lake, but is now a shadow of what it used to be. Still, the area I fish is probably 5 or 6 acres, so I'm pleased. Anyway, I decided to take a large catfish rod with me along with my bass outfit, because the carp have been spawning, and I've never caught one. So, I took some corn for the carp, and some nightcrawlers, senkos, and flukes for bass. I had no sooner cast the carp outfit out until I saw a light tap on my catfish rod. I slowly lifted the line and felt resistance, so I slammed the rod back and set the hook. The behemoth fish was a carp, and it surged for open water. As I went to loosen the drag, I realized it wasn't working! I had to horse the fish in without it being able to run. After getting the fish to the bank three times with it running back into deeper water, I finally was able to hoist it onto land. It turned out to be a solid 9 lb carp. The picture of the scale says 8lbs 9oz, however, the numbers were teetering that and 9lbs 3oz, so I'll say 9lbs even. Pretty good for my first carp! I didn't catch any bass, however, I did get a few more hits on the carp rod before the day was over. Quote
Craw Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Carp get a bad rap from most guys, but I love catching them. Great job on the 9 pounder! There's nothing quite like fighting ol'bugle lips out in open water. Powerful beasts, aren't they? Great post! Quote
Bassassasin12 Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 awesome, How did you have the corn rigged for the carp? Quote
Troutfisher Posted March 31, 2007 Author Posted March 31, 2007 Thanks for the comments, guys! I had about a size 4 hook, and I just threaded individual corn kernels on the hook, with a small split shot and a slip sinker about 24 inches above it. It worked very well. Quote
Fish Man Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 im no expert on carp but thats a nice fish Quote

Cravin Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Nice Carp, those are sport fish in Europe! I have only fished for carp once and that was by accident. It was lunch time on a two day tourney with nothing biting on very hot day. I went to camp and got a couple hotdogs and chips to eat, I sat down to eat by the water where my tube was laying and saw a bunch of carp run the bank looking for food so I threw a piece if hotdog in the water and sure enough they ate it. I took off a plastic worm and put a piece of hot dog on the worm hook and ended up landing 3 before they left the area, I believe they fight better than catfish. Quote
