BucketmouthAngler13 Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Well me and they gang hit our honey hole today, with even better luck (luck has nothing to do with it really) than yesterday. We where trying everthing with no hits at all. cranks, senkos, spinnerbaits, then I tied on a jig. First cast: twitch, twich, twich, SLAM got one on. Set the hook like bill dance and the jig came flying back at me. Next cast, same thing, and this time I nailed him. After the smoke cleared, I landed my first bass ever on a jig, and he was a whopper. Sean said it was 4.5lbs and I said it was 5lbs. Here she is: http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g9/catfishguy/IMG00001-1.jpg I was getting a bunch of hits, so naturaly my partner tied on a jig. It was his first time using a jig and he got a nice 2-3lber. Sean's getting landed: (video) http://s52.photobucket.com/albums/g9/catfishguy/?action=view¤t=IMG00004.flv I'm going again tomarrow, and the next day, and the next, and 5 days a week all summer, so expect more pictures of big bass. EDIT forgot to add, the jig was a 1/4 ounce w/ chartruse/blue skirt. Sean's was a 1/4oz w/ brown/black skirt. Tight lines and Sunny Structure Matt Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted March 14, 2007 Super User Posted March 14, 2007 Hmmmmmm ..... cool water and a big bass on a jig ..... hmmmmmmm Way to go!!! Keep at that jig!!! Quote
Tenka Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Nice fish! I wonder how you and your partner can catch fish and make videos, when i can't even catch fish! Again, nice job. Dave Quote
fezkoe Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Nice job out there. The videos are working for me but ill take the word of you guys and say they were nice fish. Keep it up and maybe next time i will actually get to see the fish. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Way to go guys and nice job sharing the knowledge!! So what have you learned? Ice out-jigs, jigs, jigs. If I can make a suggestion, use a slightly lighter jig and reel it as slow as possible but fast enough to keep it off the bottom. (a slow swim) This has been just deadly in our back coves which range from 1-4 ft, mostly about 2 ft deep. They are loving that skinny, warm water but once the sun starts going away, so will the fish. Be there early when direct sun first hits those waters and keep casting, they will come. When they do, hang tough, they will come in waves. You can stick a nice pack of 2 pounders and then nothing for an hour then you'll hit 3 four pounders in a row. They come in groups. This is how it works at our lake, just offering another somthing to try. Stay on 'em!! Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted March 15, 2007 Author Posted March 15, 2007 Thanks guys. Tonight I'll give you a full report of today's trip, and this time I'll tie on a jig sooner. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted March 15, 2007 Super User Posted March 15, 2007 I hope to start fishing jigs more this year as well. I've only caught one on a jig but I'm focusing on getting more experience with them this year. Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted March 15, 2007 Author Posted March 15, 2007 Just got back. We had a severe cold front and the bass had lock jaw. Not a single hit on anything. Dan, however, got a nice 19"er on a Bagley Balsa B. (Chart Craw) Picture http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g9/catfishguy/IMG00001-2.jpg Tomarrow is going to be freezing so I think I'll stay home. Its too bad we only had a week of warmth, but summer will be here and gone in two shakes of a lamb's tail. Tight lines Matt Quote

The water has to be a steady 60*, and the air was 75* one of the days. Its been unusualy cold here this month, so they probaly will not start intill the begining of april (full moon) Quote

The water has to be a steady 60*, and the air was 75* one of the days. Its been unusualy cold here this month, so they probaly will not start intill the begining of april (full moon) Water is 450 times more dense than air, therefore, a few 75 degree days wont cut it. If the surface temp is 60, most likely 5ft down it's alot cooler. Have you ever jumped into a lake from your boat to swim? Up where your arms are, its warm but at your feet it's alot colder. It takes weeks of constant warm temps to penetrate far enough into the water column for fish to know its time to spawn. You may have a few early bloomers, who are shallow all year, but it takes awhile for that water temp to raise in those deep water haunts that they stay in for winter. We have had 4 weeks of solid 70-80's and last thursday was the first day I saw fish on the beds. And they were building them, not laying eggs. A cold front swept through (the same that brought you snow) and now it will take atleast another week for them to move up again. Like Bassassasin said, I would bet on Late April to mid May for you.
