this may be a stupid question to some but i have never used these but bought some awhile back and i was wondering do you rig it with the tail sticking up or down?

If you will ck out the link below, it is the shad product page on the Rage Tail website. There is both photo and video hooking instruction to help you with your questions.

http://www.ragetail.com/ragetailshad.html

4/0 or max 5/0 EWG Superline hook is my favorite for the Rage Shad and or light keel weight (swimbait) hook.

Have fun with them and if you have any other thoughts or questions just let me know....

with keel weighted hooks they make more commotion and with a weightless hook they make less commotion.  Good luck with the shads they're great, over the weekend I was using a ragetail shad and had a nice one just barely slurp my shad in.  I let him take the bait, felt pressure, set the hook and my hand slipped becasue it had been raining earlier :'(

Pretty sure they're meant to be fished tail-down! :)

Tail down it will spin like a pin wheel.  It aint no different than rigging a frog. How do you rig a frog? Let's start another post ::)

Which hook are you using? I advise Gamagatsu 4/0 EWG superline hook. Again here is the link to show exact instructions. If you follow this, it should correct things for you.

For all you northern anglers, who like pike, the Rage Tail Shad is a great pike bait. For those overcast rainy days that keep the pike in the weedbeds later in the day than normal, this is the bait to try.

Just don't a hook much bigger than a 4/0. A 5/0 ewg has the hook point far enough back to get occasionally fouled by the tail, impeding the hook set.

Cheers,

why would anyone use these for pike? you will go through packages and packages of them in a day.  i am so sick of pike always biting the legs off of all my soft plastic frogs.  i love the rage tail chunks on jigs also but im gonna go to something cheaper because the pike bite the claws off so much you go through a pack or more a day

yeah big o,

thats how i rig them. ive done it with both weighted and unweighted hooks. they just seem to not stay on there for anything. i get like 3 casts out of them and then i have to start fiddling around with them every cast and just throw them away after about 6 or 7.

the action is awesome and they're exciting to fish with. but it's gettin really expensive.  :)

Be sure insert hook approx. 1/2" deep into nose, then push the nose up over the eye of the hook. With a 4/0 or 5/0 hook the bait should not be stretched at all over the hook. The Shad being stretched after penetrating the back of bait with the hook might cause what you are describing too. Ck it out and I think this should take care of it.

If you are using these for pike, are you using a steel leader with them and if so, are they tracking ok?  I've been bitten off too many times not to use a steel leader.  I tried a rage tail for a pike once, he chewed up the tail pretty good and then...gone.
