Valascus Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Well, yesterday I finally got some time to get out and fish for a few hours. First time in 3 weeks. Tough day fishing...it had just stormed hard the night before, the air temp dropped 30+ degrees, and the it was cooooooold and cloudy all day. Temps never got out of the low 40's and it was in the mid 30's pretty much all day. There were some guys trout fishing at the local pond, but they couldn't buy a trout bite. They did, however, catch a small bass. I was fishing for bass. Couldn't buy a bass bite. I did, however, catch this. Again. I was dumbfounded. I have never caught a trout. Ever. And this one decided to strike a Rapala DT-6 in firetiger. I thought that was really weird. Decent size trout too. The guys that were trout fishing were just as surprised as I was. Has anyone else had something like this happen? I didn't know trout would try to eat a crankbait. That was the only thing I got all day. Weird. I know this will probably get moved to the other species section, I just wanted folks to get an eye on it. Quote
Tom Bass Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Nice catch. I caught a trout on a black/silver Rapala floater once. I was on a lake in PA on the first day of trout season looking to catch some bass. I was getting frustrated with the number of people that had showed up and started reeling in rather than floating the lure and Pow. Nice 15" trout. Cool. By the way, I just bought a pair of those gloves at BPS. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted November 12, 2006 Super User Posted November 12, 2006 Looks like a new PB to me. ;D Quote
Valascus Posted November 13, 2006 Author Posted November 13, 2006 I suppose you are right there KU. Heck, I thought I had broke the ice and finally had hooked my first bass of the day. I didn't even know there were trout in this pond. I can see why people enjoy trout fishing though. For their size, they fight pretty well. It took me forever to get him off the hook. He had quite a bit of spunk in him...didn't wanna hold still long enough to let me get the job done. I like those gloves too, Tom. I usually don't wear 'em, but it was cold all day...and there is very little I hate more than cold, wet hands. Can't beat 'em for $9. Quote
CK14 Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 trout hit cranks all the time. caught them up to 4lbs on a jointed shadrap before....... trying for walleye Quote
Troutfisher Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Saw a guy in a deadwater section of a river I fish hook a HUGE brown trout on a rapala...boy was that thing big. I'm pretty sure you're more apt to catch a brown trout b/c they feed heavily on minnows and the such. Did you keep the trout? I'm a big catch and releaser when it comes to bass fishing, but when I head up to the mountains to fish for put and take trout, I keep them, unless they're native. Deep fry them up in beer batter, squeeze a little vinegar on top, pull out the ketchup and you got yourself a meal. Quote
Vyron Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Nice trout. You gave me some ideas now thanks Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Funny. Did you guys trade spots where you were standing after he got a bass and you got a trout? lol I had a similar experience once, even wierder though....I caught a brown trout, in Narragansett bay(salt) on a shad body, in Feb., fishing for winter-over stripers, lol. The Blackstone river dumps in nearby and evidently, all kinds of things, fresh and salt, have been caught in this location, even a salmon. Quote
Valascus Posted November 13, 2006 Author Posted November 13, 2006 I ended up releasing the fish seeing that I didn't know what the regulations on keeping the fish were and I didn't bring any type of vessel with me to keep any fish in since I was down there for nothing but C&R fishing. I didn't know trout would hit a crank. Still surprises me that one did. I could see the bigger ones doing it, but he didn't seem like he was anywhere close to big enough. Quote
Troutfisher Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Cool. LBH, was the brown trout sea-run I wonder? Most trout really have to have pure freshwater unless they are steelheads or sea-run trout. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 nice catch, You have found the same thing I did years ago trout fishing. They dont always want that size 20 fly. They will hit a crank from a reaction bite. Congrats thats a nice trout. Quote
Fish Chris Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 you mean, you were fishing in water that holds both Largemouth Bass, and ttrout, "and you were not throwing the Hud" ??? Peace, Fish Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted November 13, 2006 Super User Posted November 13, 2006 I hope you kept and ate that little fella; a little butter and a splash of lemon juice...mmmm good. I guess it is not too unusual to catch trout on minow immitating lures-at least browns, but that is a very big bait for a fish that size. That's one of the things that make fishing interesting-you never know what the next cast might catch. 8-) Edit: After reading back through the thread I see you didn't keep the fish. Probably good that you didn't, without knowing the rules for trout. I've fished a couple of times for trout in Missouri, and always had to have a trout stamp. Fun to catch, esp. on ultra-light gear.
