basspro48 Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Fished in a tournament with my dad saturday on the Pmaunkey River and was it COOOOLD. Boat check was at 5:45 and it was only 23 degrees when we got to the ramp. We launched around 7:30 and a 15 minute run in 23 degree weather is almost unbearable, after stopping off at our first spot and taking 15 minutes to get feeling back in my body we started throwing cranks around old pilings. We left that spot after the tide dried that place up. My dad got our first keeper, a 15 inch Kentucky bass, on a shad colored Bagley B-Flat 2 from a deep laydown. We decided to fish those deeper laydowns with the B-Flat the rest of the day and only ended up with 3 keepers for the day. We only had about 3.5 lbs but it was still a decent day for our first tournament on that river. Quote
VekolBass Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 You're a better man than I am. I'm sorry, but bass fishing is a warm weather sport as far as I'm concerned. I'll fish in the colder months once the air temp gets above 50, but I'll reserve my shivering in the morning stuff for hunting, and (maybe) trout fishing. Quote
basspro48 Posted November 5, 2006 Author Posted November 5, 2006 I was jealous of the guys in the treestands saturday, it was opening day of blackpowder season. We heard a lot of shots and saw a guy after the tourney with a nice 8 pointer in his truck. I can't wait til I can get out to my stand finally. Quote
Hawgin Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Vekol, bass fishing is a year round sport. When it's that cold, you just fish until you can't feel your hands and face, then you dock the boat run up to the truck and warm up enough to go back to the boat and head out again. I've had some mornings where we quit after a few hours, but those few hours were fun, especially being the only boaters dumb enough to be on the water so it's perfectly still and quiet. Basspro, congrats on your first tournament. They can become a very enjoyable and addictive experience. Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 7, 2006 Super User Posted November 7, 2006 I stayed off the water and enjoyed a nice comfortable house and recliner as I watched LSU beat Tennessee. I then went upstairs and reviewed some river maps until the Hokie-Thug game came on later than night. Sorry Basspro48, but fishing in that type of cold weather is not fun. Now, for the questions: Was the water high enough to go into any creeks? Did you throw off any drop offs or by the mouths of the creeks? Did you use any jerkbaits? Let us know. Thanks. Quote
basspro48 Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 Sorry about the really late reply Sam. The tournament was during a full moon so there was an extreme tide, it was low in the morning but we fished an incoming tide the whole day so there wasn't enough water in the creeks until about the last 3 hours. I tried fishing a drop-off in the morning but adandoned it after my dad caught a fish off the mouth of a creek. And no I didn't fish any jerkbaits, the water was a little to dirty fer that IMO. Quote
