RobbyZ5001 Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 What does church have to do with fishing? Our local sponsorship expert tommy will be with you shortly. He will get you on track to get a jersey with sponsors. Quote
etommy28 Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I hope your not referring to me, because I already PM'ed him and if you look at my history of what I said to him and every one else under 17 or 18 don't worry about sponsor, and I said the same thing again. Quote
Nibbles Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 This may be a little early for this, but I would still encourage you to see if your local community college offers any courses on marketing or advertising (classic campaigns, public relations, etc.). Employers and sponsors in almost any industry love to see initiative from prospective sponsees - especially if their actions also mirror a certain level of foresight and analytical competence. For you to acquire sponsors, you have to make yourself marketable in their eyes. If reading their company reports and figuring out what their primary message and marketing strategy is, and tailoring your image and skills to fit their needs is what it takes, then it's what you have to do. This is what I've learned, at least. Quote
basspro96 Posted July 28, 2010 Author Posted July 28, 2010 A guy that started a rod company in town gave my dad a couple rods to sell...He sold zero of them I sold two...Lol I can talk stuff up... Quote

basspro96 Posted July 28, 2010 Author Posted July 28, 2010 Haha! Yeah I doubt that....But about the church thing..Its important to me and I do alot of community service stuff there. Quote

NateFollmer Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Geez these threads ALWAYS have to turn into arguments... If the kid wants to try for sponsors, let him. If it's not a good idea, he will learn that himself. Always best to learn things on your own they from other peoples experiences. I'll agree with Tin on this one though. Make your resume sound a little more like you want to fish.. not PROMOTE. It's like walking into a job interview with a resume that states your objective is "to make money". They will laugh at you. Change your objective to something more geared toward furthering your own fishing career. Move all your fishing stuff to the top, get the rest (school and church activities) to the bottom. Again, like a job resume, you want the important stuff first. And Tin - If you're going to bash someone for grammar, at least check your own Quote
Super User Tin Posted July 29, 2010 Super User Posted July 29, 2010 And Tin - If you're going to bash someone for grammar, at least check your own For half a 750 of Captain 100 at 1am, I'm proud of myself, lol. Took them down. Sorry for being an a-hole. Quote

basspro96 Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 The accomplishments thing was just a typo..(spelling?) Haha! But I will tweak some little things...Etommy is helping me out alot! River Rat316 Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I'll agree with Tin on this one though. Make your resume sound a little more like you want to fish.. not PROMOTE. Move all your fishing stuff to the top, get the rest (school and church activities) to the bottom. Again, like a job resume, you want the important stuff first. I have to disagree with this, I get a fair amount of resumes every week, and before I even consider talking to someone about a pro-staff position I want to know their character. Highlighting community service work and other character based things (whether they be faith based or otherwise) is important. I have said it before and will keep on saying it, a persons character and salesman ship will carry them further than fishing ability as far as sponsors go. Obviously you have to have some sort of fishing ability. I would rather have a guy that places well in a couple tourneys a year, and is a good person than a complete d-bag who wins every tourney representing my company. As far as the promotional aspect of the resume, Pro staff is short for promotional staff not professional staff. So highlighting how you will promote the sponsors product is pretty important imho! My advice for the original poster is to contact the companies whose product you already use and like and try and build a relationship from there, I don't even look at resumes from people who just email me out of the blue, I figure if they don't know the product it will be pretty hard for them to promote it! Quote
NateFollmer Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Good advice River Rat... I never thought of it that way. I recant my previous post Guess I'm thinking too much into the 'job' aspect of it all. Quote
Crookedneck Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 River Rat is giving you some sound advice. Spot on. I actually had some one such as you hit me up this weekend at my grandmothers 80th birthday party. I make custom rods. His resume was very simular to yours. Same age. A decent resume. I asked him a few questions. My final question was what do you know about the rods I make? Other than the fact that he was told I made rods he knew nothing. Had never even bothered to ask me about my rods. All he wanted was something for nothing. I asked him what he could do for me. His answer was that he could fish with my rods and give reviews on them and tell people they were great rods. Jokingly I asked him if he had ever fished with a fly rod out of a boat! I started talking about how I could make him a killer fly rod. Feather inlays, custom maple burl handles....ect...ect. He was taken by surprise. Looked like he swallowed a minnow. The point is he knew nothing about my rods. Any one in buissness, isn't going to stay in buissness if they just give things away to nice kids. Which I'm sure you are very nice by the way. Do some research, use some products, fish till your hands hurt, then write resume for that specific company. See where it lands you. And be prepared for alot of no's and even more no responses at all. Good Luck! Mike Quote
basspro96 Posted August 3, 2010 Author Posted August 3, 2010 One of the first thing I asked the guy. What is the low down on your rods. I feel like I know the product. Now to use it. I'm glad I'm surrounded by such knowledgable people! Ya'll are awesome! Quote
