Hello, i am fourteen and have started to really want to fish for a living. I have been fishing since i was three and using a baitcasting reel since i was nine.

Today at school I saw a poster for D.E.C.A. It seems D.E.C.A is an afterschool activity that teaches children the fundamental of business. I was thinking D.E.C.A. could help me increase my advertising skills and make me more marketable to sponsors.

Anything you can do to learn the business side of fishing should be beneficial.

-As is the "cookie cutter" response in this section, read through the entire resume area for tips and pointers of how to get noticed.

-Keep an eye on Senko77 (Ryan). He is about as good of an example that you will EVER come across.

-Fish, fish, fish and then fish some more.

-Ask yourself, "What do I have to offer?" and "How will I help company X, Y or Z sell more products"

-Keep paying attention in grammar classes   ;)

Many more things are out there for you to learn, good luck!!!

X2!!!

The only thing I would add would be to fish tournaments. Fish local tournaments if you are able to start getting some competitive fishing under your belt.

Also, find a good tackle shop around your area and become a "normal" customer. Make friends with the owners and employee's. That can get you started.

Good luck!

Hey bud,

The first thing I got to stress to you is maintaining excellence at school.  I know your hear it from your parents and every other adult around you, but seriously, think about it.  Let's say Strike King has 2 resumes from 2 young anglers looking for a partnership with them.  1 of the angler has a mediocre school record, but the other has stellar grades.  Which one looks better?

Second is to make a name for yourself.  And to do that you have to enter tournaments, win or place high in tournaments, and get involved with as many outdoor related events in your community.

I'm assuming you fish in a Jr. tournament trail, but consider fishing tournaments against the adults.  This is what made me improve most.  When I started, I got whipped, now, there are times when I'm doing the whippin on the old guys.

Third is never stop having fun.  If you love this sport, and are determined to make a living out of it...not a job, a living, then never lose sight of the things you love about it.  In the past 2 years, there have been points where I got so wrapped up in winning money that I ended up sucking.  Do it because it's what you do, not for the money.

Good luck dude, and don't be shy, PM me with any questions you have.

Oh an to answer your original question, I think that joining D.E.C.A. would be a fantastic decision.

Not only will it give you a head start in managing your career, but any classes taken outside of school look great on your fishing resume, and college applications  :)
