candersen Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 So I heard through the grapevine that bass will eat mice. Are mice a delicacy- will bass devour them? If so, do they make a mouse bait...or is a live mouse the only option... Quote

tyrius. Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Bass will pretty much eat anything that moves in the water. If they're starving they'll even try and catch bugs flying over the water. Quote

Super User Tin Posted September 17, 2008 Super User Posted September 17, 2008 In a tourney last week a buddy of mine went to go scoop fish out of his livewell. He saw what he figured to be a craw in the tank and went to pick it up to show his daughter. Surprise surprise! It was a half digested mouse a fish had puked up in the well. I saw him start dry-heaving from my boat, was pretty gross. Must have come out of a dock or retaining wall and fell in the water. :-/ Quote
reo Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Use a wireless mouse with batteries for deeper presentations and the wired ones for a shallow bite. Experiment the wire length for added action. Niether would be practical pulled through weeds as this should be an open water application, much like a crank bait. : Both come in many different colors now as well. Quote

BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted September 18, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted September 18, 2008 There are several artificial mouse lures on the market - even a few baby duck imitations (may have to search eBay for those). IMO - a frog lure works just as well, easier to find, and probably cheaper. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted September 18, 2008 Super User Posted September 18, 2008 Way to go closing the other mouse thread Glenn... That can of worms was beginning to spill out and leave a mess. Quote
ptomacbass Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 that other mouse thread was gross. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 18, 2008 Super User Posted September 18, 2008 I've witnessed small, swimming rodents getting eaten by some predatory fish - maybe a bass or a pike, but man they hit it hard. As a kid, I had a little mouse lure, and caught bass on it. Snag Proof has a plastic mouse similar to their frogs that would fit the bill. I've seen them in all the major sporting goods stores. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 an observation: Many "mouse" lures are just frog baits with whiskers. The most appealing part of the baits I make is that sexy, sexy, sexy, tail on the end. It looks so good back there that I want to bite the stupid thing, lol With this said, I think many folks may find some benefit in adding a tail to some of your frog baits!! Anything can be used from a piece of rawhide to a shoe lace to a needle worm. Try it, what's to lose? Quote
Jeff C. Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Caught my personal best just last nite on a top water Frog.. top water fishing no mater what the bait is awsome !!!!! Jeff Quote

candersen Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 So I bought a soft bait mouse early this afternoon...It is grey, has whiskers, a tail, and its weighted. I cast in and it looks really sexy, but couldn't get any interest. It was a tough day of fishing anyway, but any ideas on how I should work this mouse? I can reel it back in slowly and it looks delicious, or I can reel-pause-reel like a worm. What do you think is gonna work for using such an apparatus? Quote
kayl. Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Is it weedless? If it's weedless, I'd fish it a lot like you would fish a frog, on the slop. You also might have good luck throwing the bait all the way onto the shore and then slowly swimming it back, with pauses. Quote
