bait4me Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 let say I am NOT sponsored by ZOOM BAITS CO. but I put zoom decals and make shirts and other appearal and wear it to a tournament. Is this illegal? Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 No, unless you falsely say that you are and any money that comes to you from said affiliation, you may be liable for. But in short, if you just want to promote someone for free ( ), go for it. Quote
flippincrazy Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 No its not illegal. Just keep in mind that people will ask you about "zoom" and if your sponsored by them. Some may give you grief for promoting them for free, but don't let it get to you. In my opinion its no different than wearing an american eagle shirt, but you'll look better in zoom. Most importantly if your goal is to get sponsors you must dress the part to help market yourself. Starting off with a tournament jersey with a few logos of companies you believe in will have you looking much more series to possible sponsors than wearing a plain shirt or simply a jersey displays your brand of boat. Just my 2 cents Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 I gotta disagree with flippin'. I think a potential sponsor would think he is dealing with someone who is more concerned with "looking" the part than earning it. JMO Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 I agree Low budget. It makes a guy look nice, but what really matters isnt what you wear. it's if you catch fish, and besides why would a sponser pay you when you're already doing it for free? Quote
flippincrazy Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 I understand your guys view completely, but still believe that one who looks the part appears more serious. Don't get me wrong I'm not talking about plastering a shirt with logos to make yourself look like your an elite series pro, but simply looking professional. I have yet to try to seek sponsors at this point in my career and have only a few small time local sponsors, that simply offered because they know me personally. I will be seeking more serious sponsorship in the 2009-2010 season, but I'll be following my own advice this year on appearing professional. I guess we'll see if it works out or not for me. P.S. LBH knows about sponsorship so I'd probably listen to his advice Zoom Baits. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 yeah i agree but you dont need logos to look professional. I have a club shirt that looks very professional without any logos on it and alot of guys are the same way. I agree with where you're coming from Flippin Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I have a club shirt that looks very professional without any logos on it 2 good points -looking professional helps - Don't need "logo's" to look professional. I remember seeing a guy at a tourny up in NH about 3 yrs ago, he has a tourny shirt he had it embroidered to look like it had patches on it but when you got up close and read the embroidery, the different shapes would have sayings inside them like "your name here" and "This spot can be yours for 5 entry fees" and "advertise here". I thought that was brilliant. I would rather see a nice guide shirt with your name on one side, name of club on the other. Add the sponsors as they come. The bigger the sponsor, the more room allowed o the shirt. TO ME...first impression, of someone wearing a shirt with patches of non sponsored brands, I see a "wanna be" instead of a "will be". Just my opinion on what my HONEST first impressions are. Quote
Daiwa Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Create somthing yourself. Like start a small custom bait company. Or make a Junior Bass Club logo on a shirt. Quote
Daiwa Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Ive also got a sponcored shirt for rc planes. Just get to know a small company. I started to get to know Blackdogrc and now Im sponcored by him. Just just need to prove to them your good. Quote

basspro96 Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Does this mean I get to but my name on my shirt in BIG BOLD LETTERS Quote

tritonman Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Own a Triton boat, along with that when bought came a Triton shirt, still waiting for my check from Triton for their advertisement (free). It's all free advertisement for these companies, most probably will not complain until you hit the big time. Quote
TournyFish001 Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 don't worry about what you wear, be comfortable. Let the results speak for themselves- if you are worthy sponsers will come start local not huge corporate like ZOOM- til then keep fishing and improving- Quote
basspro96 Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I am not sponsored my my club but I still have to speak at siminars and t.v. shows to advertise it Quote
Daiwa Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I agree with B Rob. Get some small wins. Having a list of tourny wins or ranks at tornys will be better then just one big win. Unless its the bassmaster clasic... Quote
Super User flechero Posted April 8, 2008 Super User Posted April 8, 2008 If you want a shirt to fish tourneys in and want a logo (unpaid) why not go to the C.A.S.T. website and get on of the Columbia shirts with the C.A.S.T. logo on it? That way you are representing a great cause and it says you care. Quote
Brian_Reeves Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 There are three things I want to put on my tournament shirt that won't cost people money. Bassresource.com logo, CAST for Kids logo, and my Combat Patch with CIB and American Flag. Everything else will be filled sponsors. As far as getting sponsors goes, you don't need them. Fish club tournaments and some weekend opens for whatever is available for your age and learn the biggest part of bass fishing. Domination. Let the wins and results advertise for you. Remember that when dealing with companies. They want you to do something for them. Don't go without getting something done for you. For example, a friend of mine just got sponsored by American Rodsmiths. He now has 7 free awesome rods. He is also sponsored by Berkley and Wave Worm. He's not a big shot pro...he's a co-angler on the FLW tour. Just learn how to become a recognizable force on the water and in the sales and marketing trenches and sponsors will naturally come to you man. That is their primary source of advertising. Quote
BillyBob Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Wearing logos of companies your not sponsored by, will lose you opportunities. Lets say I'm the president of a large bait company, standing in a crowd of weigh-in watchers looking for a new candidate in the area to help push my bait concept. You'de be an automatic NO wearing my competions logo! Quote
rondef Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 My wife purchased a shirt for me and she sewed patches on it and gave this to me to wear fishing since she sees how addicted I am to bass fishing, so I have no problem with it. She also did a fleece up for the colder weather. The shirt the fleece and the patches were purchased at BPS and they are for products that I use. But I only fish for fun and have no ambitions of ever fishing for money. Quote
Chad. Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 LOL I would come in with a white dress shirt dress pants and black leather loafers with a tie. People wouldn't know ehat hit them when you win the tourney ;D Quote
