Captin Obvious Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Ok this is not a question about a resume but this seems to be the section of the site that every one talks about how to become a bass pro so I thought I put it here. What would be the best college degree to get if you want to become a bass pro. I want to become a bass pro some time in my life but only after I'm done with college. Any information will be most welcome. Thanks Quote
preach4bass Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Something in marine biology or preaching. A degree in marine biology would teach you a lot about bass and their behavior. A degree in preaching and, well, you might just have the same success as Jesus, and He almost sank a boat with all the fish He caught! Either one would probably work. 8-) Quote
The_Natural Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Fisheries Biology. This will tailor your skills to improving and maintaining freshwater fisheries. You will also learn volumes of knowledge about fish behavior, spawning cycles, and life cycles. Quote
warmer Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 rhetoric and marketing - although the preaching thing may be a strong idea. Quote
wagn Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 a philosophy or fine arts degree.....or anything you really want to do if being a pro doesn't work out Your college degree won't make you a bass pro, only being the best fisherman around and winning tourneys will. You should probably choose a degree in what you are interested in other then fishing to have a backup plan Quote

Super User fishfordollars Posted June 5, 2008 Super User Posted June 5, 2008 I recommend three: Sales Marketing Public speaking A minor in any field that you have developed an interest in Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 i'm going for a major in fisheries biology and I'm throwing in a few business courses as well Quote
weknowhowtolive Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 If you watch the interviews with bass pros (there are some good ones on this site) youll notice a lot of pros will tell you its less about fishing at that point and more about selling yourself to the companies, and selling the product to the customers. Plus being fun to watch on tv. You could be an amazing fisherman but if you have a bad personality and people dont want to watch you, you arent going to be able to sell yourself to a company. Quote
Willzx225 Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I would say a Business degree with a concentration in Marketing (Or atleast I hope that will be the best since that is what I got ;D ) Also take a few Public Speaking classes so you can promote your "Brand" and sponsors better. My best friend even took a class on weather patterns which I think would be very helpful but the college I went to did not offer one. Quote
Captin Obvious Posted June 10, 2008 Author Posted June 10, 2008 Thanks for all the info guys keep it coming Quote
Foo G Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Get a degree in whatever area of expertise you enjoy and excel. If you really apply yourself, regardless of what your major may be, you will gain the skills necessary to succeed, whether it's in fishing (in which nothing is ever guaranteed) or some other field. I know lots of people in fisheries that don't know much about catching fish. I personally got my degree in engineering and think it benefits my fishing in more ways than a marketing degree (for instance) would -- using critical thinking to analyze conditions and process information; evaluating equipment and knowing its limits, strengths, and weaknesses; making tackle modifications and adjustments; improving on-the-water efficiency and time-management; keeping organized records and data; etc. It's all about building skills and learning how to apply them. A lot of the tour pros have very different backgrounds, but they're all using their own individual skill sets to work toward achieving the same goals. Quote

I wonder how Rick Clunn does it 8-) Quote
