laus Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Of course, there's the simple fact that the open-water fishing season isn't as long! What other things if any? Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 2, 2011 Super User Posted March 2, 2011 Bass fishing is not as much a part of the culture up here as it is in the south. Yes fishing is, but it's spread out over a lot of different species, Walleye, Pike, Musky, trout, salt water, etc........ Although the best of the best is from Michigan, and Ike is from N.J., so the guys from the upper mid west and the north east can hold there own. Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 There are alot that come out of my area in Tennessee, North Carolina, and neighboring states. My father used to fish professionally years ago and I asked him this question just yesterday. He said the reason we moved down here is that there are so many different lakes in such a close distance. The Tennessee river system lakes for example you have river fishing, upland resevoir, lowland resevoir, deep, shallow, smallmouth, largemouth, spots, etc... (you can practice it all and only drive less than 50-100 miles) PLUS, you are located at a 1 day drive from just about any big lake you would want to pre fish a tourn on east of the Mississippi. Sounded like good enough reason for me. Quote
Bassnajr Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Were making a run at it!!!lol The short fishing season is probably the #1 answer. There are some great sticks up here...just don't get as much attention. Quote
Bass Dude Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I'm originally from there...I think most of the reason is the environment. The short seasons, it's not as popular, and as someone else said..with all the trout, salmon and walleyes , a lot of people think of bass as a trash fish. My analogy....You don't have many professional hockey players come from the south!!! Quote
SDoolittle Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I think Jim Morrison put it best when he said "the west is the best." ;D Quote
WanderLust Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 The short season is probably the biggest factor... Quote
JacobK Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 KVD is from the "north east". We'll take quality over quantity. ;D Quote
Bassnajr Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I think Jim Morrison put it best when he said "the west is the best." ;D No doubt...winters suck here....! Almost over... What really sucks is this time of year there will be a couple of 58* days, then back in the 20s and 30s. It plays on ya mind man!!! Quote
Hot Rod Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 A lot has to do with the fishing culture re focus species as other said and the climate. It is what it is. But also look at where the vast majority of the pro tournaments are held; south of the Mason-Dixon line. While the Elites ran a few tournaments in the NE for a few seasons but now most are south again. The Classic and the FLW Championship were both in Pittsburgh too but now with the Classic always in Feb there won't be another northern Classic. So obviously there is more exposure in the south. Also there are a lot more lakes/reservoirs that are conducive to pro level tournaments in the south than in NE. Not that we don't have some good fisheries in the north just that there are reasons that the few we have are less attractive for pro tournaments. Though lets not forget KVD, Ike, Dave Wollak, Dave Lefebra, Joe Thomas, Billy Lowen and other big stix from the "NE". Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I think it also has to do with the amount of interest from the host city, town or community as well. I know they held a B.A.S.S. event here in the Chicago area some time ago and from what I read there just wasn't as big a turn out or following at the event. Granted the short season and other species being fished here are also a factor as others have mentioned. Quote
lynyrdsky1 Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Tennessee may have a lot of great places to fish but, not many people who go pro come out of TN. If there are any none of them come out of West TN. You got people from Arkansas that are close and you got some in MS but not many from West TN. Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I'm not really familiar about out in the western part. But the eastern and NC has quite a few. I know of 4 guys fishing the ELITES, FLW Tour, or PAA within 100 miles of the house. I realize this doesn't make them PRO, but they rely on these tournaments and guiding for their income so that is what I am calling a pro. And about 10 more "SPONSORED" guys. I " " sponsored meaning, free boat deal each year and most of the big tournaments paid for. The number of us other guys with bait, rod, etc.... sponsors is unreal! I don't know if it is like that in many other places or not? Wasn't Billy Westmoreland from out that way He was the man! Quote
Rangerphil Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 As far as exposure goes, when the classic was in Pittsburgh it had record setting attendance! I think for television it is better for those guys to catch 20-30 pounds a day than 5! Quote
Bass Dude Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I have to disagree with the idea that there are more lakes down south that are great for bass fishing. I lived in Central NY and within a four to five hour drive, I could hit lakes from Oneida to the St.Lawerance river, any of the finger lakes, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie...Plus a million little ponds and some really good river systems. A real bonus is that they don't get pounded like they do down here. Doesn't get much better than that!! Quote

I think a big part of why people from the Ne aren't on the elites is the fisheries up here are much different than down there. We have clear water with lots of weed growth and flats. Probably 10x the numbers of tx's are won down south on cranks than up here. Quote
skeetercraig Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 i have to laugh when i see these guys on tv fish there aint a cottage in site nothin but trees and banks , tell them elite guys to fish these lakes here in ny they have houses all over them plus boats and jet skis running all over see if they can catch bass lol no trees in the water either just tons of weed beds , i think there are alot of good fisherman here just people see bass fishing as a south thing and relate trout to the north i guess Quote
haydenf96 Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I have no Idea why? There are some GREAT bass fisherman where I lived in Mass Quote
