With the increasing snakehead population in south Florida thought it would be a good idea to help out our native species by taking a few out of the system before their next breeding cycle.

There will be Shakehead Round Up on September 19, 2010. Sign up at the boat ramp located on the North West corner of Southgate Blvd and University Drive at 7am. Two divisions Shoreline and Boat, entrance fee is $20 and total for each division will be split 50/50 one for big fish and one for most killed. Be back at the ramp at 3pm to see how you did.

We will be keeping track of how many each angler has caught, and where then submitting the information to FWC non-native species division for their records so please if you sign up bring your catch by so we can document it.

When talking to FWC about this tournament they stressed "it is illegal to posses or transport live snakeheads" so be sure to kill any you catch. If you get pulled over or checked by FWC while fishing the tournament you could get fined. Do not bring a live snakehead back to the ramp at 3pm unless it is dead.

Rules are simple for this one guys, catch and kill every snakehead you can and possibly win a few bucks in the process.

If there are any questions send me an PM.

I was just trying to give you a heads up, bro. I guess there are exceptions to the rules.

Yep, he asked permission and I gave it for 4 reasons:

1. It's not a tournament circuit

2. It's not a "for profit" event

3. It benefits the fishery

4. It's more of a informal get-together than anything else.  The term "tournament" is really a misnomer.  "Roundup" is more like it.

Good luck! We are starting to see Snakeheads closer to the Central Pa area (they are currently making their way through the Delaware river systems. I swear, if I ever see any in my local waters, I'll be targeting them until I die :) Hopefully they don't go that far West though...

Need a head count please. I have asked FWC if they have any media to pass out on invasive species at sign up and they have requested a head count so they know how much to give us. Please send a PM so I can relay to FWC.

Thanks

Dan

We have about 20 guys confirmed, those of you fishing club tournaments anywhere in the South Florida including the lake might want to change your plans. These fish are just knocking on our door and once they get into the glades forget any more bass tournaments since you will not be able to keep Snakeheads off your bait. If you care just a little bit about our fishery you will show up and kill a few fish.

I had the pleasure today to talk with one of our local guides and in two days he killed 100 Snakeheads fishing the canal along 75 west of Markham. These fish are getting real close to taking over South Florida and they just finished spawning. These fish can tolerate 50 degree water and once they get into Sawgrass they will take over and get into the lake in time. This is not about the money it is about saving our Bass fishery in South Florida.

As a bass angler up here in NY (Long Island) I say go get em guys!!!! I have fished Florida quite a few times and would hate to see one of the best bass fisheries in the country affected by these little buggers!!! I just read an article on snakeheads being found in wisconsin and maryland waters so all of us bass anglers no matter where you live need to keep an eye on their local fisheries. see below:

Snakehead fish are native to China but are imported into the US as aquarium fish as well as food fish. Snakeheads can cause serious problems to native fish populations if they get established in US waters.

A snakehead was found recently in a river in Wisconsin. Incredibly, it was not identified before it was released back into the river! It could be an aquarium pet that got too big and was dumped, or it could have been imported for food and somehow been released into the river.

A few months ago snakeheads caused quite a stir when one was found in a pond in Maryland. The media make a fuss about it and hyped it far out of porportion. Snakeheads have been found in US waters over a dozen times in the past few years but made little news until the snakehead was found in Maryland.

Snakeheads look a lot like bowfins to me. They feed in similar ways and have teeth. If you catch a snakehead, don't try to lip it! Do kill it, though, do not release it back into the water.

You should never release any kind of fish into waters it was not caught in. Snakeheads are just one example of the kinds of fish that cause problems. Carp are one of the worst of the imports.

Snakeheads are not considered game fish so there are no limits or seasons on them. They should hit live bait or artificials that look like little minnows since that is their major food.

If you catch a strange looking fish, contact your local Game and Fish Department and have them identify it. Help keep your fishing waters clear of snakeheads and other problem species

Did a little pre fishing yesterday. I caught 5 in a couple of hours. The alarming thing is that I did not catch any bass. The snake head WILL be the dominant fish in South Florida in 10 years....you can bank on it! The FWC (Florida Wildlife Commission) is doing nothing to stop them. I am not bashing the FWC, but they are standing on the sidelines on this subject.

Just kidding. Couldn't resist.

Hope you clean 'em all out.

I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone to catch that LOL.

I doubt we can clean them out but there should be a few hundred dead ones by Sunday afternoon  8-)

Allot of SnakeHeads died today :)

Report and pics would be great. This sounds like an awesome time. I have heard they are good eating. Have you tried them?

Well guys it was a great time and it was great to put names with faces. We had 19 guys fishing with a total of 85 Snakehead Kills, and 59 bass were caught.

The winner for the shoreline division and big fish was Steve Papp with a 32.5 inch Snakehead and a total of 18 kills.

The winner of the boater division was Corey Nowakowski with a 31.25 inch Snakehead and 10 kills.

After everyone took off to fish we finished up the paperwork and Jay and I decided run the banks for about three hours Jason killed 5 and I killed three with my personal best at 9 pounds at 31.50 inches.

Looking at the pattern the guys that did not catch many snakes caught more bass and the guys with multiple kills caught few to none so they have not completely taken over yet.

It has been a long day and after cleaning 30 snakes I am beat but I will get the pictures up as soon as I can.
