SPAZ Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 In a lot of his articles he always states he uses a stout rod for crankbaits. Does anyone know if he uses graphite or fiberglass for his crank bait fishing? Quote
Pencil Pusher Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I don't know if he still uses glass crankbait rods, but RC was the big proponent of glass rods for crankbaits. The original Team Daiwa Rick Clunn crankbait rod was a 7 footer with a graphite butt section blending into a fiberglass tip. The tip was clear like an ugly stick. Quote
BassBandit35 Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 he always states he uses a stout rod for crankbaits. I have tried a graphite stout rod with deep diver. Only tried it within 5 mintues. It was pure hell and felt like I was gonna break it in half cross my knee like Bo Jackson with bat. I'll stick with a fiberglass or composite thank you. Quote
Stringjam Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 What kind of cranking was the article referring to? Rick Clunn uses very stiff graphite rods for cranking around cover - - completely different situation than deep cranking. There isn't one catch-all rod for fishing crankbaits, because the method itself involves fishing baits from 1/8 oz. to over 1 oz, and depths from surface to 20'+ deep. Quote
Super User Marty Posted September 15, 2008 Super User Posted September 15, 2008 Rick Clunn uses very stiff graphite rods for cranking around cover - - completely different situation than deep cranking. I've seen him say on TV and have also read that he uses heavy action rods for almost all of his fishing because no matter what combo he picks up it has the same feel and that's important to him. http://www.fishingworld.com/pro-rickclunn/ArtofAngling/ Quote

Super User J Francho Posted September 16, 2008 Super User Posted September 16, 2008 He is often quoted as using a 7' Heavy/fast action rod with mono for EVERYTHING. He recently tried FC and a slightly lighter power rod, at the urging of KVD. He used this to catch SMB on mid to deep cranks. It isn't likely that Clunn has anything weighing 1/4 oz. in his tackle bag, LOL. He's generally a big bait guy. Quote
