swampz Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 i do not intend this to be disrespectfull to rick clunn, but i was watching the bass pros and in his art of angling segments i often find myself wondering after 5 minutes what the he!! is this guy talking about my question is, is rick clunn a genius and im not intelectual enough to understand him or is this guy just a little hard to understand. Super User South FLA Posted January 20, 2010 Super User Posted January 20, 2010 What episode of the Bass Pros were you watching? Some of his tidbits are darn near useless such as his one rod action/type for everything, and others are great, really liked his explanation of crank bait deflection. By the way, this post I think belongs in general fishing forum Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 i think his information is ok but his delivery could use some help. Its very hard to follow him when he starts to repeat himself and pausing between statements. I think he just doesn't have a good camera presence, but his record definitely confirms he knows what hes talking about. Quote
etommy28 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 here is my take on him. While he is and was a great angler, he is kinda, no very wierd and acts in a way that it turns people off(or at least me). Quote
swampz Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 i understood the crankbait deflection one it was the one about disapeering fish, the one with buddah that made me scratch my head Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted January 20, 2010 Super User Posted January 20, 2010 is rick clunn a genius and im not intelectual enough to understand him Yeah, that one - no disrespect intended 8-) -T9 Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted January 20, 2010 Super User Posted January 20, 2010 is rick clunn a genius and im not intelectual enough to understand him Yeah, that one - no disrespect intended 8-) -T9 I have to agree, alot of what he says goes over my head but his knowledge of fishing is very abundant and with that episode he is speaking of a certain mindset and mental philosophy. I can't exactly remember what it was but at the time it made sense. It seems alot of his fishing advice is from a mental aspect, at least on The Bass Pros that is. Quote
DWG1984 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I wonder if the way he acts on the show is due to the way BPS wants him to be percieved. ie as some kind of zen master as for my personal opinion I like the way he approches passing on fishing knowledge, its pretty different than most of the other guys Quote

Super User fishfordollars Posted January 20, 2010 Super User Posted January 20, 2010 Clunn is way out there at times, but the fact remains: He has forgotten more than most of us will ever know. Quote

swampz Posted January 21, 2010 Author Posted January 21, 2010 i just to make myself clear i have the utmost respect for mr clunn i would be lucky to have 1/8th of the success in bass fishing as this guy has had Quote
Elite Image Fishing Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 He is odd, but we all have our quirks... we just get to see his on film and learn a little something from him... or not. Well I can say I usually skip over the art of angling on the DVD.... unless his topic catches my eye. Quote
bocraw Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 He makes sense to me. Maybe I am weird too. To understand the owl you must study the mouse! Quote
Bassnajr Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 He seems to be the kind of guy who is VERY wise as far as fishing goes, but has a difficult time getting it across. Plus, I hear is a "loner" and would rather be left alone. But they pay him to talk to us!!! Quote
Eternal Angler Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 When I can't understand someone, all I end up doing is changing the channel. Never listened to Rick Clunn before, but I haven't heard too much about him. Quote
oteymc Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 I grew up in Southern Mo, so I can say this without having any disrespect. He may just be a hillbilly like the rest of us that grew up down in the hills, we have our own language! ;D Quote
Super User Tin Posted January 22, 2010 Super User Posted January 22, 2010 I don't know but the young red head he was dating or got married to was hot. Quote
Bassnajr Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 He's a weird dude!!! ...but boy can he fish!!!!! Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 23, 2010 Super User Posted January 23, 2010 Clunn is way out there at times, but the fact remains: He has forgotten more than most of us will ever know. In 2008 at the age of 62 Rick fished 9 tournaments placing in the top 10 in 4 of those! 2001 B.A.S.S. Louisiana Top 150 Pro/Am in the foyer of the Cypress Bend Hotel leading into the conference hall for the pre-tournament meeting there are around 400 anglers and media standing talking. Everyone is there from Harold Allen to Kevin Vandam, some were waiting in line for 30 or more minutes when Rick walks in, heads straight to the double doors leading into the hall takes a chair places in front of the double doors and sits down leaning back on the chairs hind legs and crosses his arms. I could tell some wanted to say something but not a word was uttered now that's weird Quote
bocraw Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 On Bass Zone radio they were talking about a seniors tournament for 50+ year olds. Experience is so important in fishing that IMO 50 is d**n close to peak performance age. With Rick doing well in his 60s -- like many others -- I don't see the need for a seniors tour. Anyway, fishfordollars comment about Rick's impressie stats at 62 made me think of that. Quote
jc450r Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Rick is going to be at my local BPS on Feb. 14th. I'm gonna check out his presentation, but I agree on the show he does come off as a little strange. Quote
TommyBass Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I have a tendency to agree with basically anything he says. He's a good fisherman and knows whats up. I particularly like his attitude toward one type of setup (ie same reel, action, rod, etc). Quote
