College Bass Fishing

Just recently, discovered that there are  national bass fishing competitions in college. I am currently a senior in high school and would love to be able to fish competitively in college. I was wondering if anyone could give me and others any helpful information on this topic.

whatever college you are looking at, check out the schools website and look under Clubs/Organizations/ Club Sports/ or Student Activities... if they have a fishing team it will probably be listed... if not see if they maybe have a hunting or fishin club...   and if that is the case then email the president of the club and tell he/she that you're interested in joining and then just go to the meetings

and if the school you are looking at does not have a team, then try starting one!  and i know there are ways you can go about starting a club.. it only takes you and a few other friends to start a club!

I am a junior in highschool and also looking into collegiate level fishing. I have two good friends in the Texas regional division. Although one of them, Zach Gagnard, didn't place good enough to reach the championship this year, he placed third in the national championship last year from NSU in Louisiana. Just this past month my other friend, whom I find to be better than Zach, joined with NSU so I'm looking forward to seeing him at the top next year. I know I'm going to fish in college just not sure exactly where yet. I have better grades than they ever had so I guess that gives me more options. I know a little bit about collegiate fishing but still have alot to learn. If I know any answer of yours I'd be glad to help.

Yep thats pretty much the way to go about it.  I just joined the Virginia Tech bass fishing team this year (I'm a junior).  I wish I had done it earlier.  Some clubs are better established and set up better than others, its just something you have to check out.  I'll tell you what though, if you can place high there are some fine looking cash prizes/prizes in the FLW collegiate series.  Not too shabby for doin a little fishin on the side of school

I'm with you on the FLW series, I've only done one season of the tournaments, but it was an amazing time and very well organized by FLW and National Guard.

Here is my general advice to you.  But Refer to the thread I think we covered everything.

My best advise to you as a recent college kid who played a collegiate sport. Go to the Best College you can get into, do not base your decision in which school to attend by there bass fishing clubs.  That is the most idiotic way to decide to go to school. Example, if you can get into Georgetown, but decide to go to a school that has bass fishing as opposed to Georgetown that doesn't, you are just cutting yourself short.  If anything start a program at your new school, by doing this you are:

1. Doing yourself a favor, by going to the best ranked school as possible. Without deciding it based on Fishing.

2. You are spreading the word about bass fishing and new clubs.  I guarantee if you bass fish and attend somewhere, someone else will also.

3. The pure enjoyment of starting a program and possibly winning your first year out.  You will get so many sponsors, it is ridiculous.

I started a paintball club at my school, and in our first year was National Collegiate Paintball Champions, we were champions for two years running, unfortunately I graduated and the program fell through. I payed out of pocket my first year to win our championship, our second our school and sponsors payed our way around the whole next year.

Do yourself a favor man, study hard and play hard later.  College is a place to get your future not have fun.  If you are able to balance the two then good for you.  But earn your degree to make the money so you can play hard later when you are rich  Wink.

Wow I'm old enough to give advice now LOL!!

But seriously, do well in school man, you won't regret it later.  I've seen too many kids party hard or let there sport take over them, just to find out later what a waste of time it was.  I mean why do most collegiate football and basketball players go to college, because there are no guarantees in life.

The last thing I have to say: By going to the biggest and best school possible, that is equal to money.  Bigger schools have more money. So by law in school clubs, you are allocated a certain amount of funding  by starting a new "Club". And if you can prove to the school, that this is possible money making and good exposure for their benefit equals more money. Unfortunately, for me paintball is bigger in the East Coast Schools, so I had to prove to my school, which we did, the exposure we received.  Lucky for you collegiate bass fishing is televised, with huge sponsors like Wal-Mart.  Choose wisely man, because your future also rests in your hands.

I don't mean to bad mouth any school out there with fishing clubs, and I don't know how Georgetown compares to the schools he listed, it was just one of the top schools I could think of relative to your guys area.  Smiley  Just reminding him we are going to school for a degree not for fishing.

i am fishing at the college level and it is a blast. the tournaments are very even because the age level is pretty close. i fish at tennessee tech university and i am a freshman it is the best thing ive ever done. a lot of colleges have them and the sport is growing more and more every year its getting to be a very popular thing. ill be more than happy to answer any questions you have.

I got my FLW magazine(Bass Edition) today and there is a very good article about the leading college fishing teams and what each school is doing to promote their programs. If you get a chance go on line or look for it in this months(January-February) issue.

The cover has the Murray State University fishing team on it.

the only thing I dont like about it(I have not read it yet), is im not sure how they can really compare schools from all over the country. not that i would really disagree with any of at least the top 5 but how does UNT not even make the top 25 when they placed 2nd in 3 of the major events this year.

Haha nice we're 4th.  I agree though, I think its rather hard to rank fishing teams.  Since with the addition of one or two really good anglers, so much can change.  Or with one of the top anglers on that team graduating, etc.  Unlike a sport like football, where one guy can only have so much impact, one good stick in fishing can make all the difference.  But the list is a good idea to what colleges are playing a key role in the up and coming college fishing arena

Seeing this thread prompted me to finally sign in and create a user name.  I'm a Junior at Virginia Tech, and while I do not personally know any of the guys on the team, I know they all work very hard and earned their way to the top a few years back.  If I could only go back a few years, I might have given this a shot.  Heaven forbid me say this on here, but I might be more interested in a collegiate crappie fishing team!  If anyone gets on here from VT, shoot me a PM and keep me updated with what yall are doing.  Tight lines.
