Super User Matt Fly Posted July 30, 2009 Super User Posted July 30, 2009 If the twitter reports are correct, then some better fish are being caught at this time. Lots of guys with limits already today. Ike has been twittered as well with 5. Go Ike Quote
Super User Tin Posted July 30, 2009 Super User Posted July 30, 2009 Yup, Ike, Lefebre, and Nixon all have some nice bags. More two pound fish this year and some reports of fish over three pounds. In 2005 I think big fish was between Stacey King and KVD on day 1 with a 2-14. Quote
Super User Tin Posted July 30, 2009 Super User Posted July 30, 2009 Today is probably the day to get them. Rain is coming for tomorrow and those rivers are already moving. Especially the Ohio were most of the guys went. Going to be moving and like fishing chocolate milk come Saturday. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted July 30, 2009 Author Super User Posted July 30, 2009 5 pm Est is when they stream the live weighin. I'll be watching. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted July 30, 2009 Author Super User Posted July 30, 2009 Ike sits in 5th place going into day2. Go Ike. Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 so what kinda bags are they weighing in? Sounds like more weight than 2005 but does anybody have any actual numbers? Quote
Super User 5bass Posted July 30, 2009 Super User Posted July 30, 2009 8-13 is leading (Lefebre) 8-12 is 2nd 8-4 is 3rd (Nixon) Nixon's co-angler is leading with 7-10 (Nixon is on good fish....watch out) 7-? is 4th (Suggs) 7-10 is 5th (Ike) Quote
bassnleo Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 We didn't have all that much rain here today in the Upper Allegheny Basin, probably not enough to affect the lower portions of the rivers. Just enough to keep the water colored and moving like it is. I believe you'll see a few more decent strings tomorrow. KVD's total weight in the 05 Classic should be surpassed tomorrow. It appears that this event is shaping up to be a good one and will almost certainly come down to ounces. Quote
Super User Tin Posted July 31, 2009 Super User Posted July 31, 2009 8-13 is leading (Lefebre) 8-12 is 2nd 8-4 is 3rd (Nixon) Nixon's co-angler is leading with 7-10 (Nixon is on good fish....watch out) 7-? is 4th (Suggs) 7-10 is 5th (Ike) I dont know if it is a good thing or a bad thing actually. His co got a limit which included a almost 3 pounder. So either he is on them or he stung a lot of them. Either way 10 fish and a few culls is a lot of fish to burn on one day on the rivers.Watch for Ike and Adam Wagner (BFL guy). Quote
bassnleo Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 uuhhh, forget my last comment 'bout rain. It started raining here at about 2:00 AM and hasn't stopped. Lots of rain on the radar. If we get the 1/2" to inch of rain that it appears will fall, those rivers will toss a curveball to the anglers. Drains and anything that breaks the current will be key Oh ya, GO DAVE! Quote

I read that Lefebre caught 25 keepers on day 1, talk about burning some fish. Strangely, his co didn't weigh a fish... Quote

Super User Matt Fly Posted July 31, 2009 Author Super User Posted July 31, 2009 I think you misread the article. Dave and Larry are about 50 yards off each other, both had early limits and both stayed to protect those spots for today. The article said about 25 keepers came from the two spots, both think the current conditions will keep fish replenishing. Some other sites said he was trying a few different things to pass time, and kept getting better fish by ounces, so he was culling. He lost another 3 lber late, told the co angler, don't bother with the net, its a dink, turned out to be 3 lber. Wonder if that bites him in the butt in the end? Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted July 31, 2009 Author Super User Posted July 31, 2009 Best I can tell thus far, it came down hard last night, is drizzling in some areas right now, more guys into the locks today than yesterday. Dave got solid keeper to start, Nixon had slow start, and Ike's got 3 small ones thus far. Nixon just got two small keepers. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted July 31, 2009 Author Super User Posted July 31, 2009 Twittering today is slow, most are having to twitter through ziploc bags, not as easy today, and reports are slower coming in because of this. Quote
bassnleo Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 Nixon and Lefebre can see each other, but they're not on top of each other and neither angler feels threatened by the other's presence. Lefebre said he has two specific rocks within the area that are 50 yards apart. Amazingly, those two spots produced 25 keeper smallmouths today. As far as presentations are concerned, Lefebre understandably didn't want to get into specifics although he admitted he is fishing both slow and fast. The above is from the interview. I took it to mean that Lefebre has 2 specific rocks within an area about 50 yds apart, those 2 spots produced 25 keepers for him. Either way, 25 keepers is outstanding for that fishery. BTW, I just got home, drove over the Allegheny here(about 70 miles North of Pittsburgh). It's absolutely ripping and rising, turning browner also. That will definately affect the Pittsburgh area late today or tonight. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted July 31, 2009 Author Super User Posted July 31, 2009 25 keepers. Thats alot for one individual in these conditions and for that fishery. Making the cut is the goal, and saving anyfish on day one could cost you in the long run. I think if he gets his five dinks, he makes the cut for sure. I don't see how guys can catch up when dinks are the main course and I have yet to see a toad make it to the stage. Quote
Super User Tin Posted July 31, 2009 Super User Posted July 31, 2009 I think anyone who didn't weigh in more than 7 pounds yesterday is already out of it. Tomorrow might be even worse. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted July 31, 2009 Author Super User Posted July 31, 2009 Ike has 4 thus far. Nixon has been reported moving off his spot, too muddied, has 3 in the boat. Dave has 4. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted July 31, 2009 Author Super User Posted July 31, 2009 7th place Adam Wagner from Tn has zero thus far at 11am. Have seen some movement in the middle, will it be enough to make big jump? don't know. Bohannan in 6th has zero fish at 11 am Can't find anything on Curtis sitting in 2nd or Meyers, Hawkes, or Biffle. Maybe some movement if this continues to play out like it has for over half the day. Super User Tin Posted July 31, 2009 Super User Posted July 31, 2009 Alleghaney, Mon, and Pittsburgh don't seem to hold any fish. :-/ Going to be a shootout between Ike and Lefebre. Quote

Or would you be basing your opinion on what you have seen these guys catch? I see a lot of the "pro's" and other people slamming this place pretty hard. frankly its pretty lame to do so because they are mad they havent found the 20" smallies or the huge schools of spots that the rivers are polluted with. I personally fish all 4 of the rivers and can safely say there are a lot more, and much bigger fish here than you have seen from the classic and the FWC. fact of the matter is this place is difficult to fish to people who arent familiar with it. Pro or not you need to put a hell of a lot more than a couple days of practice in to consistently catch bigger fish here. lastly try to remember A) its up north, we do not have the growing season you have down south not to mention florida strain largemouth it's a river system with an extremely healthy population of a lot of other fish than bass and the competition for food out there is pretty high C) There is a lot of pressure on these waters all season long and D) this isnt like the river systems you see normally with large tidal influences look it is what it is, just watch it, enjoy the competition and try to remember this isnt texas or florida or california. I don't know dude, I've fished with and met several pittsburgh boys who fish three rivers a ton and they all say its a dink factory. I'm sure there are bigger fish there but from what I hear the big smallmouth are few and far between. I personally think that if there were good numbers of 20+" smallmouth there, anglers of that caliber would be finding at least a few. Quote
