Bass XL Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Hey everybody! Well, today was the day I finally did it. I fished the Missouri Junior Bassmaster State Championship held at Truman Reservoir. It was a very tough day in general. The lake was over 20 foot high and it was just rough. Saturdays pre-fishing yeilded very little. I only managed to catch one keeper pre-fishing and that was on a buzzbait. I talked to some of the guys in the adult club, and they said they spent the day flippin worms and jigs. I made a mental note on that topic. Saturday night, the weather report was record colds with crystal clear skies. Great, I had some work to do. This morning rolled around and I was throwing the buzzbait and managed about 7 or 8 short fish. It was just a little after 10 am when my partner Drew (fishing for the younger division), landed a nice 3 pounder on a black and blue jig. We'd been flipping the flooded willows and some flooded dead trees. I was flippin' a worm at the time and changed over to a black and blue jig. Not even 10 minutes later, I landed my first fish. It was a pretty fish that had me in the bushes fighting for him. We decided to give our spot a little "milk run" and hit up a place called "The Eagles Nest" (its called that because supposedly the eagles nest there...go figure). We came up to this flooded shallow point, and Drew caught his second keeper for the day. Once again, it was on the black and blue jig. With about half an hour left, we went back to our good spot. I pitched my jig right up to this pine tree, and WHAM! This fish was a giant...I mean a giant. Set the hook as hard as I could and then started playin' her. She came up, shook her head.......and......gone. She had spit the jig. I figured this fish was the one I needed, and it was going to cost me the tournament. I ended up realizing that the hook was no where near being sharp, so that was that problem (once again, mental note...CHECK YOUR HOOKS!). We went to the weigh-in, and a lot of the older guys goose egged. Dock talk had gotten around to me and supposedly both of the boys in my age group had one fish also...and one was supposedly a "dandy". Josh weighed in first...1.74. Then it was my turn....2.44. Now, it was Vince's turn....his "dandy" only turned out to be 1.25. I had won it with one fish, and my partner Drew won the younger age group (no one else in his age group weighed in). So both of us won it out of our boat. It's been a pretty exciting day for me, I'm headed off to Greers Ferry in June to fish the Central Division Championship. It's going to be a tough lake, but I'm going to give it my best, and nothing less. Here's my fish: And here's me and Drew with our trophy's. Thanks guys! Quote

Just goes to show you those old farts don't know it all. An arse kicking is an arse kicking. Whether it's by one or ten, it just matters that you came out on top. Good job. Quote

I started doing fishing logs at the end of last year, and I can already see some of the valuable information that its providing me. Quote

Thanks, I'm hoping it goes well, its on the river and I absolutely love fishing the river so we'll see how things work out... And as far as the girl, the kid in the first picture looks pretty feminine lol, I don't know if its the same kid as in the second picture or not. My youth club kind of sucks, all of the kids are really young so are club tournaments aren't exactly very competitive but the state championship will be so I'm really excited about that. Do you fish in the adult club too? Quote
