Mike 12345 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I know a lot of guys on this board would disagree, but I thought that the weigh in for the Classic was absolutely outstanding. Add to the fact that a lot of guys left areas that others were fishing (esp if if others were in a better position than them) adds to my respect. I think the at the sportsmanship that Ike showed was totally commendable. Any of us should hope to emulate that. Congrats to Ike, and congrats to Ish, Snowden, Wirth, and others that I heard about over the weekend being good sportsmen! That is what makes me hopeful for the sport. Good job Skeet!
Super User senile1 Posted February 23, 2009 Super User Posted February 23, 2009 They are no different than any other human being in that position. They are paid lots of money to represent their sponsors, so only a fool would display poor sportsmanship in my opinion. Sponsorships are their bread and butter. I'm sure for most of them its sincere, but the point is you never know when money is involved. And that's my cynical comment for the day.
SudoomFisher Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I thought a little differently about the weigh in. Ike's comment about he would be happy for the other two to win it because he already won one kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I will bet it was said only with best intentions, but it came off like he thought he was better than them.

I will bet it was said only with best intentions, but it came off like he thought he was better than them. I can see where a person would view it that way....I'd thought about that too, but I also thought that he really didn't have to say much of anything at all if he didn't want. So, I ended up interpreting his comments as being respectful. More than Ike though, I heard several comments from other competitors as well as in the 'real time' blogs where, over the course of the tournament, some anglers stopped to help others in trouble (like Ish did, for example), others who were not really in contention to win the tournament gave way to other anglers (in terms of fishing locations), various things like that -- those are really things that I thing don't get the publicity that they should. They don't get the glossy coverage and footage, but hearing of those things.....especially when the stakes are so high..... is what I really think is neat to see.
R@ngerman195vs Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Ok - gonna upset the Ike fans out there. He's one heck of a bass fisherman and he deserves respect for that, but he continually rubs me the wrong way with some of his punk antics. I can handle his fist pumps and jumping around, but where did the spitting come from?!?! The second to last bass he caught, he starting spitting in the water after he pulled it in. I just don't get it. Just plain poor.

That is where the rubber meets the road and it sounds like a lot of guys stepped up.
drath Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 How about this for sportsmanship? You're the leader going into day three of The Classic. You've got a hot hole in pool four and this day could make your career as a bass angler. You're flying down the river to your spot and you see a fellow competitor (the guy in 6th place Snowden) broke down. You could say, Whew, one less guy to worry about. Or you could stop to see if you can help. According to the guy(s) writing the blogs on bassmaster.com Fralick stopped. They may be buddies, I don't know really. But still, that's great sportsmanship. Knowing Brian he was probably like, Dude, what are you doing? Get to your hole. From the blog: Fralick, by stopping to offer assistance, may have left the door open for Ashley and Evans to have a quick run through the area they've all been fishing. -D

He always acts like he wants to bring a fresh image to bass fishing to show everyone that we're not a bunch of backwards rednecks. Hello? Spitting all over the place on national TV isn't going to help the "backward redneck" image at all. I had mentioned on another thread that Ike acted very classy at the weigh in, and just when he seems to have matured, I see the footage this morning of him spitting all over his boat.

Rich Tehan Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I'm an Ike fan but i'm not going to defend the spitting. Someone said he had river water in his mouth, but still that's something ya gotta restrain or do in a tasteful manner. His celebrations have been rather angry at the last 2 classics. I wish he would keep it to the screaming, because I actually like when he screams, it's exciting to and really gives you a perspective on how amazing it is to catch a giant in the Classic... makes me wanna be in the classic.
UPS VT Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I am not an Ike fan. I thought he was being a "good boy" during the weigh in though. The problem I have with his screaming is that he seems to do it over just about every fish he catches. He is obviously a great fisherman, but I just want to say shut up and fish. It just seems like an act to me.

Ever watched Olympic swimming?? I would rather someone spit for any reason in a lake than 10 feet beside me in a swimming pool. There ain't a law against spitting. Everyone keeps mentioning his screaming... I take it nobody here has been to an exciting football or basketball game. People scream when they are happy or pumped up. Hell, Tiger woods screams, and his fans scream too! I don't understand what the big deal is???
scott k Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I love Ike, but every time he hollers and fist pumps and lays on the boat deck basking in the glory of the fish he just caught I always say to myself "Stop wasting your freakin' time!! Start fishing!" Seriously, how many more casts could he have gotten in during the course of the day if he didnt do all that showmanship to the extent he does? I know he's excited but he's in the middle of a huge tournament. As they say "They'll be time enough for countin when the dealing's done". I dont remember ever seeing KVD wasting time patting himself on the back.
