Lauren Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I don't see how she didn't qualify fairly. Why is the qualification criteria not fair? Because she is fishing in a womens series? It is not fair because every other way to qualify is open to everybody regardless of gender, but the WBT is only open to women. Men can't qualify through the WBT, but women can qualify through the opens, federation and elites. My friend thinks that maybe what you are getting at is the injustice in the idea of the seperation of the genders in the same sport. Maybe what you're really mad about is the fact that KBM and other women anglers have to qualify through a womans event instead of being able to show their skill in one inclusive qualifying event.
fishnjohn Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I don't see why people are making a big deal about a woman being in the classic. 95% of bass fishing is a mental game. But I don't think it is fair the way she qualified for the classic. If the women want to play with the boys for the big money they should have to fish the same tournaments all year to qualify.
mrbassky Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I think people are making the point I made before. I dont think the competition is the same on the WBT. Just my opinion and I am not saying some of the women cant compete with the guys they can. I just dont understand why the cant compete in the Opens or even the Elite series. How can it be sexist to think women should be able to compete with the guys and qualify that way. I dont think anbody is holding it against KBM either, I hope not. Just disagreeing with BASS thats all. I think it would make a bigger statement if a woman won an OPEN or qulified through for the Classic that way. Could you imagine the sponsors a woman could get if they were on the elite series? I dont think a woman in the Classic is going to make the impact that D.Patrick is by competing with the guys. My suggestion is give the winner of the WBT angler of the year a tour card for the elite series.
Bass Dude Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I really like your idea of giving the WBT Champ a spot on the Elites. Then again, people would complain that she didn't earn that spot because she didn't make the Elites through the Opens!!!!
Super User Tin Posted February 23, 2009 Super User Posted February 23, 2009 Then again, people would complain that she didn't earn that spot because she didn't make the Elites through the Opens!!!! Exactly, she had the easier road and it was actually unfair to the male competitors imo. If there is a way to make the Classic, everyone should be allowed to fish any event(s) that would allow you to make it there. And I think this was just a way to ESPN to try to get some extra coverage and exposure, and it worked. It had nothing to do with being fair and taring down the gender barriers...

I'm not mad about anything, I was just stating facts. Women have all of the same avenues of qualification open to them as the men do, but men cannot qualify through the WBT, because it is a womens tour. My personal opinion is that it will be good for the sport in the long run by encouraging participation among women. I hope to see the day where women compete in the elites, opens, and federation tournaments and qualify for the classic in comparable numbers to men, but for the time being reserving a spot for a woman is unfair. That said, I don't see a better alternative for getting women interested in the sport, I just hope that it is a temporary step toward an ultimate goal of equal participation of men and women at all levels of bass fishing.
Bass Dude Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I think this subject has been beaten to death. Let's wait until next year to bring this up again. No-one is changing anyones opinion, so let's get over it and move on. The season starts in a month, let's start looking at Amistad!!! >
mrbassky Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I really like your idea of giving the WBT Champ a spot on the Elites. Then again, people would complain that she didn't earn that spot because she didn't make the Elites through the Opens!!!! I think the difference is people are getting upset (pros included) because she is getting a Classic berth which is a career achievement itself. You hear people talk about credentials in this order BASS top 10s Classic appearances BASS wins AOY titles and or Classic Wins People put making the classic as a big achievement. I dont think people would have a problem letting her qualify for the elite series. I am not upset like some of the pros its not a big deal to me I just think there are better ways to promote women in fishing. I think it would look better to see her compete with the guys all year to really show what she can do its hard to judge after one tournament.
Cigarlover 1 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Throw all men and women that are pros and want to fish for the Classic in one circuit and let them all fish against each other through the season. That's the only way it can quote unquote be fair and make the majority of people happy. I personally would have no problem with that.
