family guy Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 you are fishing a tourny (co-ang) your boat is 10-12 feet from shore(12oclock) the boater is casting to the front towards the shore(10-11,oclock) your casting towards the shore(12-1clock),before your lure even starts to sink the boater hits the trolling motor to chase his lure and your lure starts to get draged through the water.the boaters lures stays where it is and the guy in the back has to reel and recast.this happend to me almost all day long.without sounding like a beeacth, what do you do/say? Super User ww2farmer Posted August 31, 2008 Super User Posted August 31, 2008 I would just firmly, but, with class tell the boater you didn't think much of what he's doing. Â I wouldn't give the guy any gas money either, and I would make sure the tournamnet director knew what a jerk he was. Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 1, 2008 Super User Posted September 1, 2008 This happens all the time. This is one of the major problems that can arise when the boater is throwing one type of bait or technique and the coangler is doing somethng else. Most  tournaments give the coangler some time up front.  If this was not the case then you were at the mercy of the boat owner. A lot of boaters will cast to cut you off.  It is just a part of fishing and it depends on the boater if he will give you any slack.  Usually the answer is a 'no" to this question.  And since the boater can throw to a target first they usuallly do much better than a coangler. Your boater seems not to have any concern about you and only wants to do well for himself.  He is what you call a jerk.  But this is a part of tournament fishing so be ready to encounter it in tournament situations. I try to discuss the techniques and baits we will be throwing with my partner and try to match his technique but throw a different bait, be it size, color or type. Sorry this happened to you but it is a learning experience.  Quote

family guy Posted September 1, 2008 Author Posted September 1, 2008 thanks for the advice guys, your right, it was a learning experiance all right, one that will hopefully never repeat itself.i just wanted to know if i was the only one that thought it was hinky or if it was just common practice. Shad_Master Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 In our club we have a guy that is pure gold in every way - including between the ears - he will do anything for you, but gets so caught up in winning that he will put his non-boater at a disadvantage without even knowing it. Â One of our regular non-boaters who has won lots of tournaments from the back of the boat was fishing with him one day and decided to climb up on the front deck when he was being squeezed out - the boater asked what he was doing and he said fishing the same water as you. Â After that he was very careful not to put that non-boater at a disadvantage. Quote
Super User Tin Posted September 9, 2008 Super User Posted September 9, 2008 I wouldn't give the guy any gas money either, Then who looks like the a-hole? It's going to happen. You need to learn to deal with it or buy a boat. If I'm in the front of the boat and I'm fishing for 5k and your in the back going for a grand I'm going to do the same thing. Worry about myself, and so would anyone else in that situation. Until I got my limit anyway. Quote
MichBassMan Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 I say would say nothing, just change to a faster pattern bait. Next time I'd try and discuss techniques and expectations befor take off. Most of the time the guy in the front with all the investment and cost is going to have some advantage over the guy in the back. Â Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted September 10, 2008 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted September 10, 2008 Deal with it or do like I did. Â Buy a boat and remember what it feels like to be in the back...... Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted September 10, 2008 Super User Posted September 10, 2008 It's the luck of the draw. I have never had a coangler complain to me on the water. I started years ago on the back deck and have never forgotten the feeling of being frontended. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 10, 2008 Super User Posted September 10, 2008 Been there, done that...once... I would rather fish in a swimming pool than the back seat of a tournament boat. > Quote
family guy Posted September 13, 2008 Author Posted September 13, 2008 worry about yourself, dont concern yourself with anyone but yourself.what a wonderfull philosophy/concept! so all you boaters out there dont start crying when the senko goes fling past your ears! gee my next tournament should be fun! ;D wow how dumb am i? here i thought it was about sportsmanship, two guys fishing having a good day on the water.boy do i feel stoopid now! thanks for imput. Super User roadwarrior Posted September 13, 2008 Super User Posted September 13, 2008 Sorry man... Other guys can give their take and I won't argue, but for me it SUCKED. I would never fish a blind tournament again, but I don't fish any tournaments, so keep that in mind. Quote

Super User 5bass Posted September 16, 2008 Super User Posted September 16, 2008 Buy a boat and remember what it feels like to be in the back...... This is exactly what I would do. The only real problem with buying your own boat is whether or not you are confident enough in your own skills to go out and catch bass consistently by yourself. If you are still learning about bass fishing and wanting to get involved in bass tournaments and all that, being a co-angler is about the best way to learn. You may just have to be straight up with your boater just so he knows where you stand. Not all boaters will be like that though. Quote

Garnet Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 As a nonboat you have to work twice as hard as the boater. Your relationship to the shore was little tight and it's your job to make it work. For the boater it's very hard to watch somebody at the back of a boat. If the issue is the boater moving when your bait hits the water you better start feeding line or change to heavier jig, things like senkos, jerkshad are just not going to workout. Being a nonboater is a tough job and the best at it are very good anglers. Garnet Quote

gatrboy53 Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 its one of the situations you have to deal w/ as a non boater.it happens all the time .sometimes you get front ended on purpose sometimes it just happens. you can demean yourself and get down on their level or learn how to adapt to every situation.the main thing is to understand the possibilities goin in and you wont be as disappointed.remember, its the same for all non-boaters,so make the best of the hand your dealt and try to adapt to catch a fish. i can assure you that in any difficult situation if you will it can make you a better non boater.even from the jerks! BillyBob Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008  If there is no more to it than you didn't like his boat control, then sorry dude, no points this time.  Its this feeling that somehow co-s deserve to have input on how and where the day goes, that got them thrown out of the Elite rear-end.(1 of many reasons)  These big tournaments with blind draw co-anglers such as BASS Opens and FLW Series, are an oportunity to learn and compete with others, unfortunately sometimes its all about the draw, but even then, a good draw is not always KVD .  Keep your "I deserve consideration" thoughts for the ABA and weekend club event. There's to much at stake in "the big leagues" to worry if the guy in the back that  you'll never see again, gets his fish the way he likes!  I could talk about how much money, time, water-experience, travel, ect. , but I like the suggestion of you getting your own boat, and finding your own fish, and living "the other side of the coin".   I've back-seated folks like Martens, Brauer, Nixon, VanDam, and a dozen more, and by a co-s definition all "JERKS"! Some of my proudest moments were when I figured how to catch behind them!!!   Ever think boaters get "bad draws too"? Quote
zellamander Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 I don't think he is talking about not being able to fish the way he "wants" too. I think he is mad about the fact that he get's put to where he is unable to fish basically. I don't blame him. You say learn how to fish from any point... that doesn't work in all cases. I've been back boated plenty of times and I'll put on a heavier jig and wizz one past the boaters head. Usually fixes things. I am a nice guy, as I'm sure many will tell you if you asked, but for me to show respect, i need to be shown respect as well. I had a guy at Grand Lake, OK named Jerry Louis from houston texas that back boated me all day long. He was a nice guy, but a poor sportsman. He caught his limit and had 1st place in the bag easily an hour into the tournament. But yet still back boated. I got lucky when he was switching out poles and the wind put us back far enough i could hit a lilly pad point with a spook. Well, i had a good bass explode on it, but he hit behind it. Sure enough that boater flipped the boat around and put himself in the hole.... i grabbed another rod with a pb&j jig and wung it past his head up in the hole, and he turned the boat right into my line, and turned and told he that was the most disrespectful thing he has seen a co-angler do in his life. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME Everyone has been back boated before and hung out in the middle of no-where while the boater is up the the prime. That to me, is disrespect. Quote
tbirdbassr Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 I fish a couple clubs ones rules are the non boater get the front of the boat for half the day the other is the non gets the say of where ya go for half the day. I started the first club with little experience and was given a boat on a cooling lake told the boater to fish I'd follow. I've had nons in my boat and told them that they're not gonna tear it up more than i will. Â The other club is a battle. I was up on 13 had 2 fish and my non pulls a 6# 13 oz after he settled down I told him to get in the front. He looked at me like I was crazy but I told him I got 2 and you're beating me by 3# WIN SOME MONEY!!!! I fished a tourney IL state qualifier with a boater how your describing been a few years ago and he boated me from the get go!!! After About two hours i was up 2 to none and he looks to me for answers I said black and he didn't get it still boated me!! I got my last 3 fish with 6' of line cause he parked me on a snag!!!! Â Never think you're screwed make the best of it and fish have confidence on a short string! Â I ended up fishing the 12 man team outta il after that tourney!! You gotta deal the card your dealt but if I dah to do a boster like your describing??? Might b a 3/4oz spinnerbait, rattle trap, no wait a minute a mag spook right by the ear they'll get the idea!!! IMHO!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D Quote
family guy Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 first off BillyBob i wasnt looking for POINTS or CONSIDERATION as you put it, simply a better way of handling a situation i was put in  without yelling, whining ect, so this way if i was put in it again, to handle it with TACT!as a co -angler i realize i am just that, a co-angler,but just because i paid half of what a boater pays, doesnt give a boater the right to treat me, or anyone else like crap! and i do realize that boaters have to put up with co-anglers crap as well ,its a two way street!but dont treat someone like crap just because your last co-angler was an idiot!or a cut-caster. and to you boaters out there who dont treat thier co-anglers like crap. THANK YOU!! i hope to be able to fish with you someday!oh and just for the record, even though i didnt catch any keepers i still gave him gas money!  Quote
