ZEN BASSIN Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 Other than for safety and water conditions, what might cause certain area's to be closed off? Especially if you and maybe other anglers know that area is a sweet spot. Quote
bassdocktor Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 Alot of times in 2 day tournaments they will close off the areas that serves as the release areas. Generally somewhere near the launch. I've seen a few tournaments in Chicago on the rivers connecting to Lake Michigan that do it so guys don't feel like they need to fish the lake. More of a mental thing with that one, but generally the lake smallies seem to be bigger than the river largies. Quote
WTRDOG Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Most of the spots that are off limits in the torney's I've fished in the past, where the areas all the guys with the big glass boats and a 225 on the back couldn't get into. And guys with smaller lighter boats could and would smoke all the guys that can drive 60 mph down a lake.If they cant get there boat in there ,that's to bad but shouldn't keep the guys who can from fishing that area. Here's another example....Here in mass all the lakes unless noted the speed limit is 45mph.Now all these guys fishing glass boats with these monsterous motors are doing well over 45mph.During a tornament they by right should be disqualified.Because the rules say you are to follow all rules in regards to boating in the state. So mostley it's to keep all the cry babies happy. WTRDOG Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I love it,nobody has anything to say because they know I'ts true.... ;D Quote

WTRDOG Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 My reply was not geared towards you or any other person on this site from around new england that posts, there are alot of good guys here..But,the guys that fish torney's in my area, they know who they are,and are on this site.Only problem is that they never want to give any info by posting, just sit back lurking.Think about it 91 views and only 2 replies. These guys know who they are and where not talking marinas and fish release areas.... bighed Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 It's usually to comply with local regulations or to ensure an even playing field. Sometimes the laws do not allow fishing in marinas or around structures like dams or water intakes. Also, release areas are usually off limits as was already mentioned. Most rules also restrict fishing in waters not accessable from the boat to keep people from fishing ponds beside the lake or other places that can be sweetened with fish before the tournament. Air boats have been disallowed in some of the series I've fished to keep people from running up un navigable (sp?)waterways. I've never heard of restricting an area because of it's ability to produce good stringers. dog, I've tournament fished out of everything from a Coleman Crawdad to the latest and greatest glass boats. I can tell you that a small boat and motor will keep you out of more good water than it will get you into. Rough, wind blown points? Distant timber stands? You'll get more casts in the best water with the big, fast, glass boat. Quote

BillyBob Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 I've fished alot of tournaments in my life and as a general rule, there are not many off limit areas other than state regulated, lock limits,( different pools have different size limits), or release areas. Having said that, on the Ohio river, they have started in some tournaments to limit the size or kind of boats. Instead of declaring off limits( in buddy tournaments, hard to monitor) they simply have disqualed air and jet boats. This keeps everybody on the south side of the rapids and rocks. Personally I think, forget all those extra rules and just fish the tournament or don't. If I can't beat a jet boat team, because their running up some brach of the river I can't get to, and beat me, next time, I won't donate. I do own a jet boat, and a glass, for that very reason...and thats not all its cracked up to be either. All said have fun, and be in competion, or don't do it! Crybabies seldom take home cash, or have any fun ! Quote

Bassnbrett101 Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 lol I'm guessing someone goes faster than 45 mph.... hehehe Quote
Super User Tin Posted April 1, 2008 Super User Posted April 1, 2008 Tin, Are you being sarcastic..? I'm either in a boat that does 30 and can go in some skinny aqua to get to my spots in certain bodies of water, or in a boat that does 70 and is comfy. It's all good to me. 8-) Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 i dont see any problems with that tin. Idk why there would be a 45 mph speed limit anyway? WTRDOG is there a reason that theres a speed limit like that? Quote

WTRDOG is there a reason that theres a speed limit like that? Most states up here do acctually have a speed limit for some reason. But with the exception of a few places it is not inforced. Just one of those things I guess. :-/ Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 here in pa we have no wake zones. the closest to a speed limit we have had is one day when it was foggy the tournament director said we couldnt go faster than 45. so basically after we launched you couldn't pass anybody or you were disqualified. that was at raystown lol Quote
bighed Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Speed limits on bass boats? I've never fished a place like that. Quote
ZEN BASSIN Posted April 2, 2008 Author Posted April 2, 2008 Thank you all for your words of wisdom and answers. Other than what has been discussed why certain area's are marked out of bounds/off limits. I also believe that if its a sweet spot and easy to catch em' and most of the anglers know, then it should be off limits. Where is the challenge and skill? It would be like going trout fishing in a hatchery. Quote
