thetr20one Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Sorry to all the Ike fans in advance! If you have a look at the April 2008 Bassmaster magazine page 14 you will see what I mean. Why does a world class bass fisherman like Mike think he needs to take such photos? Who is he exactly trying to intimidate? Me, you or the fish he is throttling? I definitely respect his climb to the top but my 7 year old daughter has more intimidation factor. She is sugar and spice and everything nice. We are close in age but his maturity is on the level of a 3 grader. Whereas you might relate a KVD to a Tiger Woods you could compare Mike to a Terrel Owens or Ocho Cinco. Intimidating he is not - a poor sport he is. I would really like to take that fish and smack the s__t out of the 135 pound soaking wet punk . All the articles on the nice things he does or has done are a moot point when I look at him from a "passionate" bass anglers view! I have lost fish that cost me thousands of dollars but have never had the urge to headbutt my boat, scream like a girl or show any unsportsmanlike conduct. That's not passion it is a selling point that has backfired a time or two (didn't Ranger drop him or something?). Why do people think he is more passionate than the other ELITE members? Because thats what he says he is and would like people say! It is an excuse to try and cover his tail. I met him at a sportsmans show awhile ago and kinda liked him but he wasn't running around screaming he was more on sponsor please don't drop me mode. I would like for him to have an excuse like tourettes syndrome. He doesn't. I know I am new to the site and don't mean to ruffle to many feathers but I got the mag today saw the pic and was irked. I do plan on taking my fishing to the next level once my future is financially secure (soon I hope) but I guess I will never be as "passionate" as Ike.
Super User Tin Posted March 18, 2008 Super User Posted March 18, 2008 Go meet him or have a conversation with him and your idea's on that will change.
Guest muddy Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 it is good to have such a mature guy as yourslef judge the behavior of others, when ineed to check my slef I will be sure to PM You
warmer Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 you know who ike is, i know who ike is sponsors know who ike is... IKE WINS! he is very soft spoken and mild mannered in person, so i'd say its part of the show for attention, and once again - IKE WINS!
Handy Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 The reason I like Ike is some of the stupid stuff he does. it tells me he's a normal guy that sometimes shows off or loses his temper. Who here can can say he has never behaved like Ike. I know I can't throw that stone! I also like Ike for the whole "where he came from and how hard he has had to work" thing. I like the other pros too but I have my favs and Ike is one of them. Paul
thetr20one Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 Have met him and he reminded me of myself when I was 15. I am 33 now and have grown fishing and family matured me. Hopefully he grows up soon I would like to like him.
thetr20one Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 when ta put yourself out there on national t.v. and act like a fool you are a fool. Swindle is a very likeable goofball. KVD is a winner acts like a winner and doesn't need to be "passionate" I am not judging him on his accomplishments just on his actions. I am one goofy actin fool but I am not a public figure. Yet!
Cyrus Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 "Have met him and he reminded me of myself when I was 15. I am 33 now and have grown fishing and family matured me. Hillbilly_Hooker Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Ike does a lot of work with youth in B.A.S.S. and I've personally met him and talked with him. You couldn't ask for a nicer guy! But, what impressed me the most, was watching him stick around at the end of a tournament until absolutely the last person that wanted one, was able to get his autograph. He was there long after the other anglers, and even most of the staff, were long gone. Go Ike!!!
thetr20one Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 You can't polish a turd! If my sponsors told me to stay all week I would. Sponsors=Money
thetr20one Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 My old club problably thought the same of me when I was whoopin them and gloating! Even though I earned the nickname JVD because I took fishing seriously and won seriously. If my daughter wouldn't have become ill I would be on tour now. But it will just make us all stronger and give me more drive to strive for greatness. I will be there just had a setback
JCrzy4Bass Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Did this guy do something to you, it seems like all Ike's selling points and all his characteristics trigger some hateful response in you. No offense, don't get me wrong we are all entitled to our opinions, but why don't you believe he is sincere and real when it comes to all he does for the sport? Have you read his book? Take a look at the life the guy has gone through to get where he is. It's an amazing story. And you know what, if I worked that hard all my life to do something that I dreamed of as a kid... your dam right I'd be getting excited. I love what I'm doing just like Ike loves what he's doing. He is the best angler out there as far as showing enthusiasm and bringing bass fishing to youth. His statements about never giving up and his fun style on the boat bring something to bass fishing that it has been lacking, the curve ball, the quirk that seems to drive a lot of other anglers nuts... to me if you have problems or questions about Ike... your letting him get to you in a way that pushes your buttons... that my friend is indeed the meaning of intimidation. To say your not intimidated after the first thread you wrote on here is definately hypocritical. I'm not trying to start a pit fit either. But I just think that someone who has done as much as this guy is entitled to act the way he does on the boat. He loves the sport more than most and would do anything to help contribute. He writes some great articles in Bassin'magazine, he demonstrates and is not afraid to show you the insides and outs of all different kind of lures and he is indeed very well spoken. Also have you had kids? When Ike did, it allowed him to allow his inner child to still have a place in his life. His kids brought about the fun in the sport again (for him). His stories of taking the girls out with their fishing gear and allowing them to enjoy fishing the way he did as a kid says a lot for a guy who is so busy being on the water all year. I hope both his girls end up on the Woman Bass Tour later on in life. Mke is a great guy and I only hope someday I can contribute in some kind of way like he has. Go Ike! Ps - Successful athletes and sports figures gain intimidation factors by what they accomplish. You are very correct that KVD is intimaidating, but it is a different kind. No one would want to go up head to head against that guy with his track record. But Ike is building one of his own. Angler of the year, classic winner, climbed the ranks to get where he is at. He's made a name for himself. If you ask me any angler on the pro tour would be intimidating. You have to do a lot of work to get to that point. And to catch fish that consistently says a lot about your game.

thetr20one Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 No he has not done anything to me personally. Ever. He has never stirred me in anyway. Until today. Something just got in my head. Hey maybe I just have cabin fever or something. I have never wanted to read anything Mike has written. I did listen to him at a seminar intently (04' I think) and took mental notes. I don't hate HIM,just the antics. I called my brother in law who is just as goofy as me, and he thought like me. The photo is hilarious (i.e. a joke). He moved me because I know and you know he has a classic title an AOG title and little respect from his peers. So it seems. I do have a daughter 7 she fishes with me whenever I am not in tourneys or practicing intently for a tourney. she has caught a 4 pound 3 ounce smallie and a 3 pound 7ounce largemouth pb. How bout that! I would not leave her to watch Ike in a fit. Just not an adult way to express yourself (sorry!) I also came from a neighborhood you would not walk through and have worked very hard to put myself into position to retire by 40. Hopefully. I don't believe in intimidation in fishing. I fish against fish and never have I worried about my area lake masters I can win anywhere against anybody! . I just put on my Ipod and fish. Losing myself in a zone. But for some reason there is always this thing called a smile on my face. Maybe it's because I am fishing and enjoying myself. That didn't sound right did it? What a firestorm. It's o.k. though I expected to catch it I guess. Maybe I was harsh a bit but I stand firm on the antics issues. It's a respect thing that's all. I don't really hero worship so I doubt I will change this view. He made his destiny I am making mine. We are kinda mirror images but in a GOOD/BAD way!
