I watched the 2008 BMC like all you other fishheads out there... but I have a question. WHEN exactly what that tournament held? February 2008? If so, that seems crazy, to have "the classic" at the beginning of the year. Why isn't it held around October? Thanks.

It's the third year the classic has been held at the beginning of the season.. Part of ESPN's new strategy I guess ! ;)

It helps with the weight of bags, and makes for a better show !

Bigger bass, bigger show !

This time was ok, I just didn't like when they were bed fishing for a classic. JMHO

BASS is following the NASCAR model.  NASCAR has their "Classic" race, the Daytona 500 first, to kick the season off.

I see it going back to summer soon. :-/

Why would you like to see it in the summer?

If they had it in the summer, I would want to see them have it on a really tough lake...like Table Rock. It would be cool to see the how the pro's react in such tough conditions.

So this year's classic wasn't tough?

Oh no, I'm not saying that at all. In fact, this classic was probably one of the best ones I have seen. I really like it when it comes down to the wire....but I'm pretty sure if there was a summer classic on Table Rock, it would be a lot tougher.

Don't get me wrong.... this year's classic was tough. And wasn't a bed-fishing tournament for that matter. It was one of the best classic I've ever watched. I'd have loved to be there with all of you.  :'(

I was just saying that I didn't like the bed-fishing in previous classic held at the beginning of the season (Toho in 2006). Of course it wasn't sight fishing because of the windy days.... It was still bed-fishing like Preston Clark did. Of course it wasn't the winning pattern, because of unsuspected weather conditions. Does this mean ESPN was keying on a sight-fishing bite ? Maybe  :D

It's just that I think the Bassmaster Classic has something special attached to it.... and I don't like the idea of the top pros trying to win it on this period of the year. (Of course they're still competing against each other under the same conditions).

I guess big bags help the show, which helps the sport ... so I can't really complain.

I don't think it's the need for big bags. I think the main reson is that it raises the level of excitment at the beginning of the year. This will, in turn keep the excitement level high througout the season. Before they moved it there wasn't many of us watching the tournaments during the season. We waited for the Classic and then we tuned in.

The Elite Series fishes a long schedule and the events are pretty much nationwide making the year even longer considering the amount of miles they travel each season.

The Classic participants are decided during the previous years Elite's and to put it in the middle of an ongoing season wouldn't make much sense. And putting it right after the last Elite would just extend the season even longer when the anglers are looking for a break.

Plus, having it as the kick-off tournament each year helps the Federation anglers who make it to plan their seasons without having to work in the Classic in the middle of a busy schedule. And in theory...the Classic should have the most competitive fishing of the season because the anglers have all winter to get prepared for the biggest tournament of their lives, plus the field is cut in half and they're fishing for half a million bucks.

When the Classic was in Pittsburg a few years ago a lot of folks whined because it was tough (less than 13 pounds won it).  When the Classic was in Florida a couple of years ago folks whined because it was a spawning tournament (plenty of big fish caught bed fishing).

The moral of the story is: People like to whine.

The Classic schedual is already set for the next three years, so no need in whining.  Just enjoy it.

BASS is set on keeping the Classic just how it is. The Classic is the Super Bowl of bass fishing and it makes sense to kick off the season with the biggest tournament and allow companies an excellent opportunity to establish new products early in the year. You'll see quite a bit of new things at each of the Classic Expos. The show this year was pretty large and a lot of new products were selling like crazy!

The main reason for holding the Classic during cooler weather is the survivability of released bass. Both Bassmaster & FLW are trying to get away from hot weather tournaments for this reason.

I loved the classic at Pittsburg !

I'm not whining about the classic being held at the beginning of the season. It's not for me to decide the date anyway, so i guess I don't really care. I'm just saying that I prefer to see the pros battling in tough summer conditions.

And then again I'm not complaining, I'm grateful to BASS for the Classic. We don't even have such events here in Europe.

Just giving an opinion !

LONG LIVE THE BASSMASTER CLASSIC ! :)

I admit, I loved the Pittsburg Classic.  Granted, my wife and I were there and I was cheering for KVD, so that made didn't hurt, but I loved it.  I also loved the spawning tournament with big weights the very next year.  I just love the Classic.

I agree with everything except the Elites are pretty much nationwide.  Not this year.

I like the new format and schedule....I did not care much for the SUPER 6 hype though...and I watched it streaming on my comp live and could not believe how long they would drag out the weigh in..Those people in the crowd must have been there for at least 4 hrs to get through 50 anglers..

I have to tell you, I do honestly like the format early...  Let me tell you, I have fished it... Toho early like a couple years back is brutal... It could be cold, windy or hot and nasty or a  mix of everything including rain...  The early spring is great for all... It inspires the Southeners and gives the Northeners a bit of want for fishing weather...  And I am not tlaking Ice fishing... It also helps the sales for the companies...

Wow nice to know I'm not alone  ;D

I'd hate to fish that river seeing how poor the bite was, but then again I loved to watch all the field struggle..... A nice win for KVD !

I was at the Classic this year and it was very exciting.  The object is to promote the sport of Bass fishing but also have good television. It is so exciting to sit there and think someone sitting back there could have a big bag of fish and could leap past 10 or 12 people to take the lead.  In places like Pittsburgh it just couldn't happen.  Not like the southern states.
