Just recently started tournament fishing and have heard several clubs talk about qualifying by way of a 6 man format.  Could someone give me an explanation on how that works?  Thanks.

Could be the 6 man team format that BASS federation started last year.

I'll bet that's what he's talking about. Each club gets three boaters and three nonboaters and they compete agaist other club teams. The total weight of the six fishermen is counted for qualification, but the top boat takes home the cash.

6 man wasnt started last year, its actually been going on ever since I can remember....even back in the Red Man Series days. The way its done in Virginia is that if you finish in the Top 6 in your club (via point system, total weight, total fish or whatever), you qualify to be on the 6 man team. Usually the top 3 in your club go to the 6 man tournament as boaters, #'s 4-6 go as non-boaters.

At the 6 man tournament, you are paired with boaters and non-boaters from your region that made the 6 man thru their club.

Your club has to be affiliated with B.A.S.S. Federation Nation to be eligible for the 6 man tournament.

What fivebasslimit has described is what I've understood to be.  I believe this is what they were talking about.  Thanks for helping to clarify things for me.

I fished my first 6 man in 1975. I went as a non boater and I drew a guy that

was a very good fisherman. I think his name was Mr. Parker. I had a high performance boat back then also. It was a 14' with a 25hp Johnson with custom

seats and all the bells. This guy had a 17 or 18' something with 115hp motor.

When he pulled out the helment and put it on I new I was in trouble. I did manage to catch one fish that day and a guy from our club won the tournament.

Best I can remember Mr. Parker had two fish. It was a good day on the water. ;)

Oh yea I think that guy I drew went on to be PRO Fisherman. ;D

I think you may be confusing two different things. You're talking about Red Man which is now FLW and saying that you have to be B.A.S.S. affiliated.

I don't know about the FLW side, but I'm fishing the B.A.S.S. team trail. Last year was its first year and the first B.A.S.S. Bass Club World Championship will be held in October of this year. I guess its possible that each state does it different, but in our state tournaments both boater and nonboater are from the same club. The two fishermen combine their catch to make the best five fish limit. The boat with the heaviest limit gets the check, but the club with the heaviest combined three limits gets the points to advance. Its not until you advance to regionals that you are paired with someone from another club. Check out the B.A.S.S. Federation Nation homepage for the BCWC rules.

I was talking about the BASS team trail and it was started within the last 2 years.

Yes, there has long been 6 man teams that competed at a State Regional level but the team does not move on just individual anglers.

Yes it did. Remember Brian Kershaw who won the bass masters classic and

then got killed in a plane crash. He started in the federation club, won the six man, won the state and made it to Bassmasters Classic and won that. I think he was the only one to do that. ;)

Correct, the Red Man was separate but back then the Red Man Series is what everyone wanted to fish, at least around here. I was just referring to a former place in time, when both BASS and Red Man were thriving, not that they were the same. Sorry for that confusion.

WE used to have a Bass Club called Buster Browns, all UPS ers.     We were affiliated to Honey Hole in Texas.     Around 300 clubs.     You could send the top 3 teams or top 6 individuals from each club to the state tourney, You fished as a six man team out of 3 boats.    2 day cumulative totals for all fish.     Competion from other trails finally did them in.
