Question On Culling

Hello everyone! Last year i fished my first 2 tournaments and had minor success because i was new to the whole thing. So this year i figured i would be catching more fish as i am fishing around 20-25 tournaments.

I picked up some of the CUL-R-ROPE'S from texas tackle.

My question is when putting the snap in the bass's mouth, what part do i put it on?

Also do tournament fisherman weigh their fish, or just guesstimate which one is lighter and throw the lighter one out?

Never guestimate. Use a culling beam

Many culling wires are designed to puncture the skin.  Newer ones are much more fish friendly using a boga type grip on the lip.

I use the grippers this doesn't tear the fishs mouth. Always weigh you fish

1/100 of an oz can make a differance. 8-)

Bass Pro Shop sells a tournament culling beam for around $13.00. You put 2 fish on it and the heavier fish will tip the beam down.

I think the best way would be to weigh each fish and then write it down next to its color. Then you just look at the chart and know which one goes back next.

The one with the clips seem like a good idea but i haven't seen anybody who says they do and the 2 review on BPS site says they don't hold.

I have that x-tools kit that JT is talking about.  I read those reviews too, unfortunately I haven't been catching enough in my tournaments to even worry about culling.  2 of the boaters I drew used those clips and didn't have any problems with it.  Hopefully Saturday I will be able to cull some fish.

Mike,

The kit that I just got does not "Pierce" any part of the mouth. The clips

just hook to the bottom lip (sort of but not exactly like a clothes pin). I

will post more information about the quality and ease of use for this product

after I have had a chance to test it.

I got the same thing JT has.

It tends to slip a bit but only on the smaller fish because they seem to a lot more active when in the livewell.

Ok I admitt I've bought ever digital scale available.

Berkly = Junk goes blank with dampness

Stren= just doesn't work most time

CullmRite= expensive good software to cull

Xtools= mid/high price culling software clips are junk.

All these have one big weakness they all have a pressure switch and if you rehook a fish at a different angle or hold at a diferent angle you get a different reading.

I've went back to high quality spring scale.

Chatillon Scale they are super acurate and completly repeatable. You can hook the fish any way an get the same results add a white board and makers from BPS.

These scales are mid price $60 - 70 and if you rewiegh a fish you will get the same results.

With the clips you need to watch how many fish you have in the well and how many you clip, if to many they will tangle and fall off the fish.

With the stiffness of the x-tool clip this may not be a problem.

Im not sure if you got the xtools set so you wouldn't have to poke through the basses mouth.  But I thought I saw during the classic someone using the xtools set but they took the plastic clip off and put a metal one that went through the mouth in its place.  Its an idea if they don't work out as planned.

The guy that bought my xtools clips at my yard sale put the fish chain clips on them.

If you guys use this chatillion spring scale (it's made for fishing) you will never think digital again.

During the classic I seen Rick clunn actually had a homemade setup. I didnt see what the clips were, but it was a thin rope/lanyard tied to a hookless crankbait. I thought that was a pretty clever idea...definitely different.

That could of been one of the BPS cull systems. They make one with colored balls and one with colored crankbait things.

Thats my system with a chatillion spring scale. I will be selling my cullm rite and my xtools they have no repeatability.

i have the berkely culling system, i love it, it has a built in memory and you scroll throught the diffrent color clips and it shows you the weight and it tells you what color clip to cull and it also gives you a total weight of all 5 fish its a little price but its worth it to me.

I use the Quick-cull sysytem http://quik-cull.com/ and have had no problems. Have been using the same set for 4 years now, and they work great. don't slide off the fish. I put them on the lower jaw in the middle. even with 5 fish, LM or SM, in the live well, I have never had a fish throw one of these.

what is nice about them, when using my culling beam. the beam will hook up to the quick-cull clip nicely so you don't have to peirce the fish mouth.

           In a tournament, "Time is Money", time spent on weighing fish is less time on baits being in the water.

A culling beam will get your biggest five to the scale.  

I do have a color code system that I use when fishing tourney's.     When I catch a fish on that body of water that would be deemed as a Kicker or Big Bass, I put the solid green cull marker tag on the fish.     Thats a "MONEY FISH" and chances are, its not going anywhere.       The second largest bass will get another "White and Green" cull.

I use the "Red" tag as my "Danger" tag.     Very close to being a short fish that will be culled hopefully.      The second smallest fish that goes in will get the "White and Red marker".

There are no decisions on guessing, as a system of your own or one similar will have you pulling the right fish out of the livewell with out grabbing every marker to compare.

Saving time means more casts.    

One thing I looked for in cull tags was a big ring on the end which allows me to hook a culling beam on with out fumbling around with the fish.     The hooks on the cull markers makes it easy to hook to the culling beam without ever removing any hardware to get the task done.
