Soft Plastic Frogs vs. the Pre-Rigged kind???

Which frogs do you guys like better?  The soft plastic ones you use with EWG worm hooks, or the pre-rigged ones like Spro Bronzeye or Bobby's snag proof...?

Explain.

It seems like the soft plast rage tail types would have better action, but not as snag proof?

They're two completely different baits in my opinion.  A horny toad type frog works best buzzed on the surface.  Snag Proof style floaters work best for me when I work them slower with pauses and twitches. JMHO

Good point- I guess I am thinking the horny toad types are like a weedless buzz bait.  So you have to keep them moving though or they sink?  Unlike the Bronzeye, which I know stays afloat when you let it sit there.

They are 2 different baits. I like frogs on top of lily pads and toads on around the edges of lilies, weedlines, etc.

They may be for different circumstances, but I use them the same way, with great results.  I prefer soft plastic toads to hollow bodied frogs.  That slow sink is a great advantage.  I buzz them through pads, slop, jerk them once they sink, pause them on top of lilypads and "hop" them off, and on and on.   You can do more with a soft plastic toad then with a hollow bodied frog.  Hook ups are easier.  

I do use both, but IMO the soft plastic toad is more versatile and for me produce way more fish.

4/0 ewg is fine 5/0 ewg is better......

also I used to bend hooks alot on standard wire hooks sometimes just getting the hook out of a bass so I started using superline hooks by gamakatsu

The ZOOM Horny Toad hooks or many of the Mustad Ultra Lock or similar hooks with springs or pins that slide in the nose of the bait.  My soft toads last longer with these types of hooks.

The Mustad hooks have a plastic peg and you can use a drop of superglue on it when you insert it in the toad and the bait stays on quite a while.

my favorite hook on all soft body toads is 5/0 to 6/0 gammy superline or heavy wire hook. this hook provides the additional keel effect that is necessary to provide ezcellent action and insure that the toad runs belly down everytime

The Gammy G-Mag Oversize hook does a better job of being a keel than the Gammy Superline hooks for the swimming frogs. Also its the perfect length for those baits, has a bigger bite and the wire diameter is equal to the Superline hook. I didn't do it for this photo, but I open the bend of the G-Mag a little to get the point more parallel to the frog body and that improves the hookup ratio also.

Wayne, it's amazing how many use too small of a hook on the toads and either miss fish or recieve poor action results. I am partial to the Rage toads but might try your hook instructions as well

bubba77, if you didn't notice, the hook bend is not thru the body. The hook bend is placed between the legs and then the point is skin hooked on the back. That way the plastic does not interfere with the hook penetration and the frog just swings out of the way allowing for positive hookups. The Zoom Horny Toad hook is rigged the same way.

Another hook to try is the Gambler Double Toad hook. It has a screw in attachment for the nose of the bait and the double hook fits around the bait and rests on top. Nothing penetrates the plastic. You can skin hook the points or leave them exposed on top.

I've been tryimg these hooks out with Cane Toads and Horny Toads this summer and they are decent hooks for toads.

I think 5/0 is the perfect size for Horny Toads.  If you have problem with the frog rolling over or on its size, Owner makes a 5/0 spiral lock hook that's weighted.

I swear by the Rage Tail toads with a 5/0 keel weighted hook.  They always produce for me.

i use 5/0 on frogs 4/0 on senkos.

IMHO buzz style frogs catch more fish and the Spro "Rojas" style catch bigger fish.

I have been messing around with these for a while and had zero luck until recently trying to keep them from doing barrel rolls through the water. 2 weeks ago I tried to remedy this with Gamakatsu weighted superline EWG hooks; Bingo! did the trick! keeps 'em belly down and I can modify the action with the rod and reel as I see fit. I have gotten a number of LMB in and around lily pads now that I finally got it figured out....
