Tournament Scoring Systems

My local bass club is looking into changing the way we award points for our tournaments.  We currently use a point per ounce system with penalties for dead fish at weigh-in.

Since my club only has about 30 members, I was thinking about a system where the winner is awarded 50 points, and each successive place is awarded one point less.  Those that do not catch any fish will get 20 points less than the last place of those that did catch fish.  A bonus point could be added for each pound of fish caught.

I think a system like this awards a person for being consistent.

I just want to see what other clubs do that might be a viable option that I can present to the general membership at out next meeting.

How does BASS do it's scoring for AoY?

My club does a "paper tournament" -- catch, measure and release. Points are awarded according to the length of the fish, with a minimum length of 12" and premium points awarded for 15" and over. The best five are counted as the "stringer" and the winners are awarded finish point -- 100 for 1st place, 95 for 2nd, 90 for 3rd and so on down to 19th place and then everybody get 10 points for participation. We fish 7 tournaments per year and you are allowed to drop your lowest two finish points for the year end "Mr. Bass" award. We all use the same measuring board so there is no discrepancy for the length and the score card is totaled and signed by your boating partner (either boater or non-boater). Not only does this promote Catch and Release, but in the summer months it is easier for us to get tournament permits from the DNR guys. The rules do allow each member to keep one "trophy sized" fish per year, but nobody every does.

I'm in 2 clubs....

One does the point per ounce format, the other does a scale; 40 points for 1st, 39 points for 2nd and so on down.

IMHO, the 40 for first one is my favorite. I think it better reflects how an angler does overall on a tournament by tournament basis.

In the system where points are awarded by ounce, an angler can have a really good tournament or two (say 15+ stringers) plus a few low ones and still win AOY based on really just the good tournaments.

BASS uses the 300 point system.

We have about 30 members and we run a 100 point scale 3 point loss per position 3points lower than last for the skunkers we also have a .5 bonus for each fish caught and a 3 point bonus for big fish so if ya got first with 5 fish you end up with 102.5 second with 5 fish would be 99.5 third with 2 fish one being big fish you end up with 98 points works fine took several arguements to get it done but everyone likes it in the club

Our club also uses a 100 point system with 100 pts for 1st, 99 pts for 2nd, etc.  It works well for us.

we run a 20 point system.

my club is limited to 20 members.

winner gets 20 points, 2cd 19, 3rd 18, ect, ect.....

as long as you bring a legal fish in you get points.

there are no show points or bonus points

we use to use a wieght points system , but if you missed tournament that was at a lake that was know for big weights you got srewed .you could come in last place with big weight and have more points that a guy who won a hard tournament where only 1 or2 fish won it.

Our 20 point system seem to be more fair and we like it. each year some brings up the idea if changing back, but when it comes up to a club vote we stay at the 20 point sysytem. It just works better for us.

Personally I like the ideas from the various points systems described.  I've got a meeting coming up soon so this will come in handy.

It comes down to this, weight systems rewards anglers, disproportionately for high weight tournaments, mainly in the spring and fall. Points systems even the seasons out, a win is a win, doesn't matter if you had 5 pounds or 25. We use the points system.

I like that logic too.
