IrishJig Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Why is it that every time somebody puts a microphone or pad of paper in front of Brent Chapman he whines about Mike Iaconelli? This time the NPR was doing a story on the growing popularity of professional bass fishing and the first comment out of Chapman's mouth is: "I've tried to make a name for myself by being professional, I think some other people try and go the opposite route," Chapman says. "Try and do the Dennis Rodman-type stuff. I think the fishermen that try and do that, they are going to be a flash in the pan." Iaconelli responds with a dignified: "It's nice that you're seeing different personalities," Iaconelli says. "I don't think you want to see one personality across the board. And so we've got a whole bunch of different kinds of people here. And when you show that, it's great because people can relate to those personalities, and it's nice to have that." I don't know if it's personal or professional jealousy, but Chapman needs to get over whatever it is about Ike that bothers him. He is no flash in the pan, and he's not going anywhere for a long time. For the whole article: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6168653
Super User 5bass Posted November 3, 2006 Super User Posted November 3, 2006 I'd hardly call a Bassmasters Classic winner and current AOY a flash in the pan.....who is Chapman kidding? Is he for real?I'd lay money right now that he will never win either title.
Bassinfreak2 Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 LOL! Some people really do NOT like IKE! That's just too bad because it looks like he will be around for a looooong time.
The Duke Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 I don't like a lot of people I work with, but I don't make it known publically. I agree Chapman should keep his remarks to himself, or at least make them more objective. Only 1 way to interpret what he said, and I agree with the statement, "Who is he?" Duke
VekolBass Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 People make a name for themselves by winning. That's what Iaconnelli does. Nuff said.
basspro05 Posted November 4, 2006 Posted November 4, 2006 I'd hardly call a Bassmasters Classic winner and current AOY a flash in the pan.....who is Chapman kidding? Is he for real?I'd lay money right now that he will never win either title. I will take you up on that offer anyday of the week FiveBassLimit, Chapman finished strong in 2005, winning back to back tourneys, the Busch Shootout and the Top Gun Championship. I would put my money where my mouth is and say he will win the FLW championship in the next 5 years, the bassmasters classic in the next five years, maybe not angler of the year, but the "Who is he?" remark, well here is a list of his accomplishments www.brentsbassline.com. And dont think I am an Iaconelli basher, I own his book i follow his career and root for him everytime i get the chance to watch him on TV, I am a huge Iaconelli fan
Super User 5bass Posted November 4, 2006 Super User Posted November 4, 2006 I didnt look at his site but I do stick with my opinions and comments.......no BMC or AOY for Chapman.
Super User senile1 Posted November 9, 2006 Super User Posted November 9, 2006 I don't agree with Chapman but he has a right to his opinion. Maybe Iaconneli's antics just bother him more. That's fine by me if he's bothered by the antics but he obviously made a bad choice in words when he stated that Iaconelli is "going to be a flash in the pan." If I had said that about someone who has the ability of Iaconelli, I would make a retraction. Brent Chapman is a K.C. Metro angler trying to make good. I wish him well in that endeavor but he would be wise to choose his words carefully in the future.
dhuffnmu Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Chapman is a baby. If everyone was the same it would be boring. I love what Iaconelli brings to the sport. He has brought a whole new generation of people to the sport. And to protect our fishing rights for the future we will need as many people as we can to vote when needed. Plus no two people are the same. Iaconelli may over due it a little but he is excited. I never really see myself like that until I started fishing tournaments. I get in them and my adrenaline starts going more and I get louder and more excited. But hey thats just me. I would put my money on Iaconelli any time over Chapman. How many classics does Chapman have.........ZERO. How many AOY's does Chapman have..............oh yeah that's right ZERO again. How many does Ike have 1 of each. So he is just going to be a flash in the pan. Hey if you are a flash in the pan and win those two distinctions in bass fishing then I would love to be just that. What fishing needs less of is WHINNERS!!!!!!!
Super User Matt Fly Posted November 9, 2006 Super User Posted November 9, 2006 My take on Ike has always been a work in progress. First, I defended his antics saying, "There are worst role models out there, and since when did fishing get seen by 10% of the population, given the publics chance to witness it first hand or by the early Sat. Morning viewing times. Then the flag incident came about. If I had any hindsight, I would have kept quite ( no laughing Please), (purely hindsight on that remark also). The guy can fish. The guy gives back to his fans long after the other guys have gone. Last point, Ike doesn't need his resume read for us, his is well known. Could someone tell me again about what Brett has done in his 12 years of BASS? LOL. Matt.
basspro05 Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Brent Chapman was ranked 9th in the world "yes i said world" going into the 2005 Cabelas Top Gun Championship which featured anglers such as Dean Rojas, Mike Iaconelli,Toshinari Namiki, Takahiro Omori, Tim Horton etc etc..., he won this tournament. Accomplishment"yeah i think so" so you guys can refrain from making Brent Chapman is a nobody comments. As I said earlier I have met Brent Chapman many times, and Mike Iaconelli, they are both great guys, and d**n good fisherman. Could it be that Mike Iaconelli has marketed himself better and been able to fish by taking more risks, because he is no longer married and has more sponsors. Chapman fishes conservatively, he has told the local newspaper "Financially I have to catch my limit for sure, i cant go out at this point and slug for the fences and take as many chances as i would like to" So quit bashing if you do not know the guy, yeah he made a bad statement, but don't call him a whiner or a nobody unless you have done some research first.
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 9, 2006 Super User Posted November 9, 2006 ********************** MODERATOR NOTE ************************** C'mon guys...Take a deep breath before responding here. I don't want to spoil the fun and I'm not taking sides, but we're getting a little too warm. So, before this turns into a fire, we need to kick it down a notch. Let's play nice. roadwarrior Global Moderator
Skidder Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Maybe Brett should change his style, I doubt Ike, Denny, and KVD get up in the morning worrying about Chapman. He has won and still doesn't show up on the radar! :'(
Super User Matt Fly Posted November 10, 2006 Super User Posted November 10, 2006 My bust on a typo, his name is Brent, and It was just a typo. Brent is one of many who have the same views towards Ike, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the best way to put someone in their place is to beat them consistently where it counts, on the water. Matt.
Skidder Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 Chapman whining again? I did not know he stopped! Everytime I here him he is sniveling about something. :'(
basspro05 Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 You are really mature skidder, roadwarrior says to quiet this post down and you try to feed the fire, I am proud of myself, I am going to suck it up and stay out of the Chapman war :
IrishJig Posted November 13, 2006 Author Posted November 13, 2006 But Skidder is right. He complains about individuals marketing themselves as "Dennis Rodman types" rather than let the media and the public see them only for their fishing, yet all he does in front of the media and public is whine. And it's what he's becoming known for.
Nick_Culver2 Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Honestly guys how old are you. I'm not trying to be rude or anything but this is becoming very childish. your acting like kids on a play ground. Our moderator said enough is enough and yet we all still take low blows. If Brent wants to whine let him. I'm an Ike fan and a Brent fan. He is a very accomplished angler. He's trying hard just like Ike did. We could have said the same thing about Ike 5 years ago before he won the classic. He was the same as Brent is now. One title away from being a true contender in any tournament. the to the post about KVD, Denny Brauer, and Ike being worried about Brent. Well they should just like any one who's in the top 50 on the tour. They all could come right up behind them in any tournament. Plus if they worry about any one else. They're forgetting the simple part of tournament fishing. you can't beat any one unless you catch the fish.So with that said you have to catch the fish before you can worry about winning or losing a tournament. Just my .02 cents
IrishJig Posted November 17, 2006 Author Posted November 17, 2006 If I don't care for the topic of conversation in a certain thread, I stay out of that thread and let the people who care about a certain topic have their way with it. I wouldn't write about how I'm not going to write anything. And I wouldn't write about how the conversation is beneath me and I don't like it. That wouldn't make much sense, now would it?
basspro05 Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 You have turned my words around, I said I will not contribute to this post about people calling Brent Chapman names anymore, I never said that this conversation was below me. I was respecting roadwarrior's request that we calm down, but you continue to try to add to the fire. At 31 years of age, I would think you have better things to do than to try to provoke 19 year olds to get in a flame war about two professional fisherman. Now I am sure I will get a rash of crap for posting this, and maybe the thread will get locked, but I was not going to sit here and have people like Irish Jig putting words in my mouth my 2 cents
Bassinfreak2 Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 COME ON GUYS "CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?" Lets all agree to disagree and let the Chapman issue go.
