darren Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 I have never thrown a frog.. Picked up a spro frog and plan to !)flip it up onto a mat and 2) skip it under som overhanging brush......my question is how to you work it once it hits the water....I suppose it doesnt do the walk the dog action like a spook, do i just gently shake the rod tip as I reel.....thanks darren Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted August 28, 2008 Super User Posted August 28, 2008 I caught a bunch of fish on a Spro Frog last week. It is a great producer. I got some awesome video as well. You can walk the dog with the Bronzeye Frog but it takes very slight twitches. Most of the time I work it like I work a popper. The bites are explosive and the fish take them deep in a hurry. Quote
JShrock07 Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 Actually it does work just like a spook. When I watched a guy throw one the other day and I was very impressed with the action. He threw it on mats and just twitched it just like you work a spook. Make sure you have slack in your line before you twitch the lure. I watched him throw this lure for quite some time with no luck but then again that day we didn't get hardly any topwater action. I would buy one but they are a little too expensive for my cheap *** right now. :'( Quote
darren Posted August 28, 2008 Author Posted August 28, 2008 thanks for the great info....another question is this.....I can only skip with my med.power mod.action 7ft. st.croix...will this rod have enough backbone or am I going to miss fish on the hookset....darren Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted August 28, 2008 Super User Posted August 28, 2008 Your rod should be okay...but thats stretching it a little.Your better off with a 7 MH also to get the fish out of any cover.More importantly braided line will help immensely. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted August 28, 2008 Super User Posted August 28, 2008 A Medium is way too light for frogs. Quote
MARSH MASTER Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 The medium might be to light but with braided you can make up for it a little. I like to fish them with a fast twitch to get that reaction strike, I hardly ever pause so the fish don't get a good look at the lure. Down here in the swamp the frog is one of the top producing lures. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted August 28, 2008 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted August 28, 2008 7' med heavy - 65 lb braid -high speed reel 6.3 to 1. This is my setup for frog slinging and I lose very few fish. Quote
Joshawa Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 I would buy one but they are a little too expensive for my cheap *** right now. :'( Amen! We got lots of toothy northern up here that just love frogs and one bite and they are either gone or full of holes and rendered useless. I just use the plastic variety on a 4/0 EWG worm hook. They are cheap and the bass love to nab them when they sink off a lilly pad or scum patch. A Medium is way too light for frogs. I use my 7' Med Croix with 40lb power pro and have no problems pulling them out of the thickest slop I can find. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 29, 2008 Super User Posted August 29, 2008 Trim one "leg" shorter than the other to get a Bronze Eye to walk. I use a Heavy/Fast flipping stick for frogs. I don't have a dedicated frog rod, and this is usually spooled with 65# Power Pro which seems to work well in pads. I've used some 7'2" H/X-fast so called "frog rods" and they seem to be just right for this, as well as being a nice rod for grass jigs. Really, anything 6'6" MH or better should be fine. I have a couple of Avid (med/mod and med/fast) rods, and I wouldn't say that they would work just fine for this. They might work, but even with braid, pads will give you trouble. Quote
Simp Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 The Spro Fogs are awesome!!! I've went to 40# braid with a 7ftmh rod to haul them out of the thick stuff. Here is a nice 5lb fish I caught out of my park pond on one. YES MY PARK POND WITH A FREAKING FOUNTAIN ;D ;D! BTW I also suggest you mix up the retrieve. I always walk it but sometimes I can get a very fast pace when there is some chop. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 30, 2008 Super User Posted August 30, 2008 I use frogs with 30 pound power pro and a 20 pound mono leader. A Medium action will work with the braid. How fast do you guys usually fish floating frogs? Quote
Simp Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 How fast do you guys usually fish floating frogs? I think you have to change it up depending on the conditions and location. When I have some chop I have to fish the frog hard to get it noticed. While at the same time if I'm in some lilly padds I need to really slow it down. I've had times where the frog is half off a lilly pad and a bass explodes sending the frog sometimes several feet in the air. Personally I think walking the frog even in place causes a reaction strike compared to a simple chug and stop method. My dad has been fishing the same type of frog but I'm schooling my old man out there with his chug and pause method ;D. One thing is for sure I work them slow compared to any other bait I fish. I'd say I fish a jig and frog at about the same pace but it's possible I fish my frog even slower. Quote
tritz18 Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 let it sit a bunch, the majority of my strikes are when the frog is just sitting there. then pop it and pause. But remember count at least 3 seconds (slow 3 seconds ) after you see the hit to make sure the fish has it, then set the hook. good luck Quote
