Simp Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Ok did somebody say smallies? Count me in I've yet to land one and I'm dieing too!! So whoever does the boat coordinating this year I need a smallie expert! ;D RW you bringing a boat this time? Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted July 5, 2009 Super User Posted July 5, 2009 I go away for the weekend and come back to the BR Roadtrip announcement. Count me in. Haven't made up my mind if I want to stay in a cabin, room, or campground yet. Probably going to be somewhere with running water that's hot in the mornings. The campground at Kenlake was a joke. Hot showers were a rarity as well as parking space. Probably going to be a room or cabin the more I think about it. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted July 5, 2009 Super User Posted July 5, 2009 From what I was able to learn from my research, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee have reciprocal agreements for Pickwick lake. A license from any of the three states (including a temporary license) is accepted by the other two. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted July 5, 2009 Super User Posted July 5, 2009 Just Googled the trip, 705 miles - 11 hrs. 51 min. Not too bad of a hike from home. I'm looking at the lake on Google Earth and it looks like a typical Tennessee River system lake. Lots of possibilities for fishing various methods and styles. Should be a numbers lake for sure. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted July 6, 2009 Super User Posted July 6, 2009 From what I was able to learn from my research, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee have reciprocal agreements for Pickwick lake. A license from any of the three states (including a temporary license) is accepted by the other two. That's what I was wondering. The agreement I saw on the Tenn. interactive fishing guide stated that a valid Tennessee freshwater fishing license got you the ability to fish all of the waters on Pickwick within the agreement. Then it states that this is open to residents of any of the 3 states. It doesn't mention whether the same agreement covers non-residents of the 3 states. Quote
simplejoe Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I'll be there. It was a good time last year. 12 hours and 27 min. from Pittsburgh, Pa. I'll reserve a room tomorrow. joe Quote
Chris W Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 I used to fish Pickwick some around the Natchez Trace bridge probably been 15 to 20 times I only remember 1 trip that I or someone in my boat caught a 5lb+ smallmouth. I have never caught a 7lb+ smallmouth but I have had several hooked and at least 4 have been on Pickwick lake, every year there are 8 to 9lb smallmouth caught on Pickwick. It is a great lake. Most of the big fish come from the main river. I have to wait until our tournament schedule comes out in Oct. but if we do not have a tournament I will come fish too. This will be my first Roadtrip if I can come. Quote

Meeting and mingling with all the guys is another. Dinkfest? 6-8 lb. Smallies can't be considered dinks and the largemouth are very underrated. B.A.S.S. held an event there in '07 and has one scheduled for '10. Maybe they don't know anything. Quote

Super User RoLo Posted July 7, 2009 Super User Posted July 7, 2009 I have some pics of a few: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/smallmouth_record.html 8-) The Alabama State Record (10 pounds 8 ounces) was caught on Wheeler Lake below Guntersville Dam. I well remember when David Hayes broke the incumbent smallmouth record, it rocked the whole angling world. For the record, the former world-record smallmouth (10lb 8oz), hailed from Wilson Lake in the tailrace of Wheeler Dam. Roger Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 7, 2009 Super User Posted July 7, 2009 One of my fishing partners is BassResource.com member SS140 (Neal Coleman). This spring he caught a 6 1/2 lb smallmouth on topwater during a tournament and collected $1500 for big fish. I have caught a few 5+ on topwater and one just over 7 on a 3 1/2 Gitzit. However, all of these late spring and summer fish were caught while targeting green trout. Much like CJ's 4.5 at this year's Roadtrip, smallmouth will be caught, but not targeted. p.s. RoLo, you are correct, but unfortunately I cannot modify an article like we can modify a post. -Kent 8-) Quote

Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 7, 2009 Super User Posted July 7, 2009 Green Trout is a regional name for the Largemouth. Quote

simplejoe Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 These trips are more than the fishing, I caught a bunch of dinks but I have no complaints.(Just couldn't find the biggins) Brian (Btech) on the forums him and I talk all the time over the phone and I met him on the trip. I just went to the last trip to put faces on the names you always see on here and of course to go fishing some place I would of never have gone if it wasn't for the Road Trip crew to put it all together for us to enjoy. You have a catered dinner on Wed and bunch of new products to try out. Like now I love having JJ's magic, Evolution jigs and Rage Tail on the boat when I head out, if I wouldn't have gone I would of never even tried them out. We also raised money for the Cast For Kids charity which is always a good cause. joe Quote

electrikal Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 I'm stoked!!! This will be in my backyard. I'll definitely make the trip. As far as the smallie fishing in May, it can be excellent especially on the old shell mounds and old Indian mound excavation sites. Check the following articles: http://www.alabamagameandfish.com/fishing/bass-fishing/AL_0508_01/index.html http://www.alabamagameandfish.com/fishing/bass-fishing/AL_0206_01/index.html As far as reciprocation goes read the following: http://www.outdooralabama.com/Fishing/freshwater/where/reservoirs/pickwick/reciprocal.cfm Basically if you wish to fish the area upriver of Waterloo or mile marker 224 (approx. 17 miles from Pickwick dam) you will better off with an Alabama license as it is good for the entire Pickwick Lake area. The current is stronger in the area from Waterloo up to Wilson Dam and I find smallmouth fishing, during May, is better from Panther Creek up to Wilson. Lookin forward to seeing everyone from Guntersville again and meeting all who can make it. Quote

electrikal Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I failed to mention that a nonresident license from Alabama is good for all of Pickwick also. http://www.outdooralabama.com/fishing/freshwater/where/reservoirs/pickwick/ Scroll down to the Links section. A link to info on obtaining licenses online is also available. The Tenn license does not cover the Bear Creek & Yellow Creek areas. This reservoir stretches 50 miles from Pickwick to Wilson Dam. If you wish to fish the area below Pickwick Dam a Tenn license would be needed. Quote
