What is the best hook for bass???

Hey ive been catching some bass but not always my hook tends to go through and i hookset hard! So i was wondering whats the best hook for a nice bass??

I like Owner and Mustad but I do use Eagle Claw and Gamakatsu, too.

Some of my Eagle Claws like to rust for some unknown reason.

well im usaully fishing in pretty heavy cover and in about 4 feet of water

stay away from eagle claw. they are dull and they rust.

gamakatsu's are my personal favorite but owners, mustad, and VMC are good too.

4/0 is a good general size for most baits for bass.

offset means it has that little bend behind the eye that helps hold the bait on the hook.

ewg means extra wide gap and that is good for tex-posing because the hook point is inline with the hook eye.

my favorite hooks are Gamakatsu G-Lock 4/0 EWG. quality hook right there.

stay away from eagle claw. they are dull and they rust.

I've yet to run into a hook that I bought new that I would say was dull.  I'm sure that they would all puncture my skin if I set the hook on myself.

Eagle Claws MAY not be as sharp as other hooks but they are far from dull.  I've got a couple packs of eagle claw hooks and I compared their sharpness straight out of the pack against gammy hooks and I felt absolutely no difference.  Most of my hooks are gammies (especially since my Wal-Mart regularly puts them on sale), but I think the dullness claims regarding Eagle Claw hooks are WAY overblown.

As far as brands go, I mostly fish Gamakatsu.

You'll want to get a little more specific as far as what hooks you want recommendations on for fishing different baits.

You may have more of an equipment problem than a hook problem. What is your line size/type and rod rating?

I mainly use the BPS version of the offset hook.  Sizes 3 and 4 extra wide gap.  Have wanted to try the Gamakatsu brand but haven't yet.  Reason being you get a lot more for your money with the BPs brand.

Do the color of the hooks really make that much difference?

Also I saw where one guy mentioned that he flattens out the barb on his hooks to make it easier to get it out of the fish.  Is this a good or bad idea?

Straight shank hooks offer a higher hook-up ratio over offset hooks up until the diameter of the plastic reaches that of a Senko then the offset is better.

My personal favorite is Mustad's Straight Shank Denny Brauer Flipping Hook

I have gammies, but i found owners stronger buying owners from now on and personal favorite vmc extra strong hooks.

I am primarily a Gamakatsu hook person,  but I've purchased some eagle claws... have to agree on the rust... but I had two break at the apex(or should I say minimum point) of the bend.

Owner, Mustad, Eagle Claw, and Gamakatsu, are the best in my book, but for a good hook and good price i like eagle claw for sure!! ;D

In my opinion Owner makes the best hooks I've found but they are double the price of Gamakatsu and may not be worth the difference to you. I admit I mainly buy Gammys cause I'm cheap. I prefer 3/0 red EWG for 5" senkos, that size hook seems to have the best action and fall rate and I don't believe I've yet lost a fish because the hook was "small". That being said I would jump to 4/0 and larger for larger baits or Ika's which I like to make sure that I have a very wide gap to accommodate their fat lil bodies. Conversely I would downsize to a 1/0 light wire hook for the small 3" senkos or tiny beavers because you don't want the hook to improperly weight the bait. I will hurt the action.

As far as best, whichever one you have tied on when you lip that lunker!

I probably have 30 different hooks in my term. boxes.  Many are Owners, some are Gammys, and there are also a few oddballs, like Matzuo Sickles and Lindy weedles octopus.  Some are EWG,. other round bend, even others are mosquitos and octopuses.  Almost none are red, LOL.

Getting the picture?  No one hook is the best.  Tell us the application, and we can offer our experience and opinions on what is best.

For instance, if you are fishing 7" Berkley Power Worms on a classic t-rig, I like Owner Cutting Point Round Bend Offset hooks in 3/0.  There at least five other EXCELLENT hook choices out there that would work just as well.

Owner. Their finesse wacky hooks are the best I've used, and their J-Hook is by far my favorite weightless t-rig hook, especially as an avid braid fisherman. And for t-rigging with a bullet weight, Owner offset shank. 8-)
