NateFollmer Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 I used to use a set up similar to that. I currently have a Diawa Ultralight set up that works great. I hardly ever use it though because once you get hooked on a fly rod, you'll never go back Nice fish! That rainbow looks like a winner. I'm still waiting for my palomino... Quote

I'm still waiting for my palomino... yea. a few years back my dad caught like a 24 inch 6 lb rainbow and he gave it to a friend he new to mount it and they guy kept it and never gave it back, but anyway where i go they seem to put a decent amount of palominos in, my dad caught one a couple inches larger than that one Quote
NateFollmer Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Yeah, I know a few creeks with a lot of Palies, but I'm usually too lazy to drive to them haha. Sounds bad I know, but when you have such good brown fishing around what's the point of driving double the distance Quote

Sounds bad I know, but when you have such good brown fishing around what's the point of driving double the distance the closest trout streams that are half decent and can hold stocked trout year round are like an hour away from me. i have some near pittsburgh but basically all get fished out the first day. i wish i lived up in the mountains, i caught some nice brookies on medix run up in benezette Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Ultra-light is an awesome way to fish for trout as well as pan fish and stream smallies. Most Ultra-light rigs you see are short, 5' +/- which is nice for fishing brush lined streams with limited casting room. A longer UL rod is nice for ponds and lake crappie. Quote
Ern Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 I guess I'm Blessed. I live about 5 minutes from one of the best trout tailwaters, South Holston Dam. I get to hit it about twice a week year round. I like using the flyrod there, but to consistantly take good fish under any conditions it is hard to beat a spinning rig. I have several. Couple of my favorites: 1) Shimano Symetre 500 and St Croix Triumph 5' UL. I use this one for smaller lures and when throwing bait. If I got a penny a fish this rod has paid for all my tackle. 2) Shimano Symetre 1000 and a 6' Berkley Trout tactix. I have been using this one this fall for throwing some larger lures (#9 rapalas and #2 spinners) for the browns. The main reason I like is the short handle on rod. It helps working lures while wearing a vest. Quote
tholmes Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 I love catching trout on an ultralight rig! I use a BPS 6.5' Micro-Lite rod and a Pinnacle Deadbolt reel with 4 lb. line or a 5' Mitchell rod with a tiny little Quantum MS-00 reel with 2 lb. line. Can't wait 'til June when I'll be heading to Colorado for a week of trout fishin'! ;D Tom Quote
bass or bass ? Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 I'm with NateFollmer, I don't fish for trout, but I do fish with a fly rod for sunfish, crappie, bass, and stripers. Anytime I would use an ultralite, I'm using my fly rod. Quote
CoBass Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 I've spent most of this season fishing light tackle exclusively. Trout included. I live in a state that's famous for it's trout fishing yet the only time I specifically target them is in the winter when the lakes are frozen and the bass fishing is done til spring. I use a 6' 6" St. Croix premier light/fast rod with an Okuma stx20 reel spooled with 4 lb Fireline crystal braid/Fluoro leader when I'm goin for bass. And when I'm goin for trout I use 4 lb Spider Wire super mono. Trying to land 20" rainbows and browns on light tackle will give you a real quick education on using your drag. Not to mention it's more fun than dragging them in on their sides using heavier gear. Tight Lines...CoBass Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 21, 2010 Super User Posted November 21, 2010 I use a centrepin and UL/slow rod for float rigs. Steelhead,'bows, browns, and even salmon are taken on this rig. Rod: Reel: Results (1st fish today, small brown hen, 22"): Quote
bassman018 Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 I use a cheapo Shakespeare UL. Its i believe 4'6 andis great... I actually use it for panfishing, trout, and anything else... It typically sees more use than any of my rods.. mainly because I can walk to a panfish spot. And it is a 10-15 minute drive for trout fishing Quote
Luke at Gouldsboro Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 i primarily bass fish so I don't spend a lot of money on trout gear. I have a 5 foot ultra lite shakespeare, and I use 4 pound mono. Its really all you need for small streams Quote
