Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 16, 2011 Super User Posted February 16, 2011 You can take him now but you won't need to take your rod and reel with you but that's ok , he won't be fishing long. Quote
stoney723 Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I took both of my boys at age 2. I didn't take gear for myself, but I did bring snacks and drinks. We fished a municipal park that was loaded with panfish, and kept it exciting for them. The key in my opinion is to just let them have fun with it. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 17, 2011 Global Moderator Posted February 17, 2011 My parents have pictures of me sitting on the bank in a diaper holding a fishing pole before my first birthday. My suggestion is to find a small pond with lots of bluegills or sunfish, they don't have to be big. Get yourself a couple cane poles or spincast combos and some nightcrawlers and let them watch a bobber. I would suggest not even bringing a rod for yourself. When they want to leave, leave. It's about introducing them to the sport that you love so much in hopes they can find the same enjoyment from it. After awhile you can start to teach them how to tie a hook on, bait their hook, cast, and unhook their fish. Then you can start to think about bringing your own stuff and fishing a little bit, but remember it's about them having fun. Don't forget plenty of snacks and drinks. It's a good chance for you to get back to the roots of fishing and just enjoy being on the water! Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 17, 2011 Author Super User Posted February 17, 2011 thats gonna be tough not fishing my self but ill let the wife and son have their fun. he can reel and manipulate a pole i gave him an old trigger ice rob with an old quantium bait caster on it when he was about 9mo. first he used it to whip me and the wife then slowly he learned to reel in and "cast" on my command oh and set the hook he knows that to. zero limit Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 You can take him now but you won't need to take your rod and reel with you but that's ok , he won't be fishing long. X2 He will lose interest fast, chasing butterflies throwing sticks unless you have help leave your gear at home Quote
key chain bass guy Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I agree with leaving your gear at home. I took my daughter fishing for the first time on her second birthday. I did bring my gear. I don't think I was able to even get one cast in. Since then I don't bring anything with me, that was three years ago. I believe you will have more fun watching your son anyway. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 18, 2011 Author Super User Posted February 18, 2011 ill prolie go the cane pole route in a local pond stocked with gills and bass Quote
endless Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I tried to take my son out at that age and all he wanted to do is play in the water or run in the woods if near by. He loves the woods. I can't wait to take him camping when gets a little older. I'm going to try again this year since he turn 4 in August to take fishing again. That's my son in the avatar. I want to say that was spring last year. Good luck and WOW on casting a baitcaster. Have fun and post the pics! Quote
