As a kid, I'd sit on the pier and drop in a BARE shiny gold colored hook and watch the gills attack it.

If I'm not using live bait then I'm tossing any of an assortment of hand tied jigs. I'm so lucky to be able to fish and guide on perhaps the best trophy bluegill and bass lake in the country. Because of that I get to try out a lot of lures that people bring or mail to us to use. I've grown to love hand tied jigs. I usually tip them with some type of live bait like worms or wax worms. Right now I'm waiting on a package from Jim Gronaw, bluegill writer for In-Fisherman. His reputation as a jig maker is excellent I can't wait to try them out.

I'm slaying them with this tactic. Buy some frozen squid and cut off a section of the head with two tentacles and hook it so the tentacles trail in the water. Incredible action and they are so tough the gills can't steal them off the hook. I catch sunfish for flathead cat bait and I can load up my live well with one squid head!

I've used a small gold hook and waxworms or small jighead and waxworms, thrown on a 10' Sam Heaton Crappie rod.

Live worms work well too if you don't mind feeding the blueys.  They are very adept at getting that piece of worm off he hook without getting hooked.
