are you using those huge poles for crappie? If so, get a nice ultra light, that will be fun!

was bass fishing he just went after my deep diver

Ultra lights are great for Crappie...even better when a good sized LMB surprises you on a Crappie jig...

Absolutely.  I love fishing ultralite (or at least light) tackle.  You get so many more bites.  Bluegills, crappie, bass, other sunfish, etc. all will attack ultralite baits.

For me, that means more fun.  And believe it or not, I've never had more fun than when I was casting mini crankbaits into a school of swarming blue gills.  Some of those babies were bulls!

And on a 5' 6" light action rod, the fight was a lot of fun.   :)

Wow, that crappy had a big appetite. :o

Crappie are super aggressive in my personal experience. One day while bass fishing I caught one a Bomber Model B (that thing is 2 1/2" long and FAT) and one on a 1/2 oz spinnerbait. They were going crazy that day I guess.

Crappies are plenty aggressive and are not the picky type of fish. I have only caught 1 crappie probably because of where I live (Blacksburg, VA). Surprisonly there are very little bodies of water that hold any crappie at all for a good distance.
