No Pics yet..... No Safe Ice.

I have had the chance to sharpen the blades on my auger, put new line on the bluegill rods, the battery for the fishfinder is on the trickle charger.  Everything else is in the ice box just waiting.

Friday night, we got down to -6 and got a good looking start.  Last night only got down to 32 with what the weather man so eloquently called a wintry mix.  Right now we need a couple of really cold clear nights, a no more snow.

BTW, most of my jigs come from a company called K & E Lures.  Its a local home grown company.

I will be going soon, some friends have gone already, the ice last Tuesday was 10 inches, the next night was -12 degrees.  It has warmed up to the 30's in the days with snow the past few days.  I am ready.  The one day a friend caught 5 rainbows, none under 18 inches.

Holy Cats!!!! You already have 10" of ice? I only have about 1/2" of ice on my canal. The next few nights the temps are supposed to go down into the teens, and highs in the mid twenties. If the temps stay like that we might have safe ice in the canal by next week. We probably won't have safe ice on the lake until after the holidays.

Crazy isn't it, this lake usaully does not get that much ice until January. The guys went out on Saturday with 4 inches, and a couple days later was 8 inches and now up to 10 inches. We have had some really cold weather. below zero for several nights, with highs around 10 degrees in the day. looks like we will get more ice fishing in this year.

I start my my days off tomorrow, so I will be heading out to give it a try.  A friend caught a 5# rainbow yesterday.

Went out last night and hammered the crappie in 5-8 depths in 16 feet of water. It was fun until I ran out of propane then it was time to go. All together I caught about 40 fish and 13 nice crappie. Here is the ice equivalent of an arm out cell phone pic.

I went today, only had a few bites, no fish.  Going to try to go Monday again.

Hey IDbasser, that's a nice looking trout there.

Back here in Michigan, I've been stuck fishing for gills and crappie, but not much luck in the size dept.  I did get one northern about 29" last Sunday, but inland pike are just too slimy for my tastes.

Our good trout lakes are still two-three weeks away from having safe ice.  Then the deep jigging can start.  How deep is that lake you're fishing?

I am fishing on my favorite smallie lake.  Max depths in the summer around 40 ft in the channel, not sure about in front of the dam.  We are catching the fish in 6-7 feet of water with 12 inches of ice.

Must be nice to able to fish that shallow.

My favorite trout lake is Higgins Lake, and we start at around 80' and can go down deeper than 100'.  Of course we're after lake trout, and they like to hug bottom way down there.

Makes using braided line an absolute must.

I sure would like to catch a lake trout.  Sounds fun.  It was a slow day out there today, lots of people and very few fish.

Well, got out to channel lake yesterday about noon, and caught 4 keeeper size gills and one barely keeper crappie.  No pics, sorry.  got them all jiggin waxys in about 5 feet of water.  Ice was about 8 inches thick.  It was a slow day, but nice to get out.

I am going out as soon as my kid gets home from school.  Hopefully we can get one nice trout.
