dilloniowa Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I went out fishing on Friday late afternoon around 5 p.m. I went out to the baitshop to get Berkley Powerbait Original Power Worm 10". I got Purple colored worm for bass. I also got Catfish Stink Bait. I left the baitshop and went to pick my friend up. Went to my cousins cabin. We got fairly large dock. I get my worm and hook and connect it. Cast it and let it sit so I can get my catfish pole and dipped it the stinkbait cast it other side. I start to reel my pole. I got huge bite with in 5 minutes. I had ten minute fight with the fish. It was jumping in the air. I have no clue it was. So my friend took a picture for me so I can post it here. Quote
Quitlimpin Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 We call em Gaspergou in my part of the world. Caught plenty of them ugly sob's. Must have been a heckuva fight, that one is definitely good sized. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted July 28, 2009 Super User Posted July 28, 2009 A member of the sheepshead family, but always called a drum: http://fish.dnr.cornell.edu/nyfish/Sciaenidae/sciaenidae.html 8-) Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 28, 2009 Super User Posted July 28, 2009 Its the other way around, member of the drum family (mostly brackish and saltwater), also known as sheephead, sheepshead, or freshwater drum and closely related to the familiar redfish. I've heard from some of the locals that small (<14") specimens make good eating. They take anything a bass takes, and they get pretty big up here. I'm surprised to hear that the fish above was jumping. In my experience they usually dig deep and try to hod the bottom when hooked. Here is an 11 lb. brute caught on a rattle trap: Quote
Uncle Leo Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I had a guide in Texas fry some up for us. I never ate drum before, although I have caught them. I have to admit they were wonderful. Great white meat fish and quite tasty. They will sure bulldog you. Quote
wvbucketmouth Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 For sure, thats a Drum. They get HUGE around here on the Ohio River, and the things will eat anything! Fun to catch though. Quote
Super User Micro Posted August 2, 2009 Super User Posted August 2, 2009 Freshwater drum apparently taste like crap. Curiously, the saltwater drums (spot, croaker, etc) are delicious. Quote
