IDbasser Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Today I tried bow fishing for the first time. Was out catching some smallies and the place is loaded with carp. I got 2 and my buddy, who brought the bow, got 2. I heard that they are good smoked, so I am going to try it. This is my first one, 10 1/2 pounds. Quote

Red Bear Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 i caught 2 carp around that size and 1 bigger, night fishing off a dock at smith mountain lake this past weekend, apparently they were hungry for night crawlers. i would have never guessed either weighed 10lbs though. when i set the hook in the biggest one, it was like setting the hook in stone, there was no give other than my drag popping when i first set it. it was a fun fight and the thing was jumping when i got it near the dock. two of them had sores on them and such, like a bass does when its bedding. do the carp reproduce in SML or are they sterile? anyways, bow fishing sounds fun, id like to try it one day Quote

This is because the department of fish and wildlife puts grass carp in a body of water for weed control. Don't ever kill a grass carp because they are there for a purpose, and you are just killing the money you spent on your fishing liscense. Common carp are ok to kill though. Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Sounds like a heck of a lot of fun. Don't listen to the carp haters. I grew up going to fish frys where your choice was catfish or carp. I always chose carp. The fillets were scored about every 1/8th of an inch to let the bones cook out, this made them extra crunchy and delicious. Quote

Lynx Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Nice catch. I have personally never tried bow fishing but I have heard some stories about it, wifeys grandfather used to do it for carp all the time. How that carp taste? I have never eaten them before. To boney for me. A friend of mine & I always go fishing for them to have fun & then release. Pound for pound they give one of the best fights on lite tackle. We have a place where it 85% catch rate when you go there, their all 8LBS & up. I seen some 20-25Lbs come out of there to. Quote
