mrlitetackle Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 nice cat bro!!! gotta love'em......great battlers. ;D Quote
coffee Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 From the shape and size of the anal fin it looks like a channel cat to me, I can't quite tell but from the look of the swollen forehead it may be a male getting ready to spawn. Quote
airborne_angler Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 If the tail is forked its a Channel cat. Otherwise if its an ugly brown color and has a hideous face with a lower jaw that protrudes out further than the upper jaw its a flathead. Blues look like Channel cats with the exception of the forked tail. Most of the times a male channel cat will have a huge blocky head with a slender tapered body Quote
bass or bass ? Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Nice one. Definately a channel. Happy fishing. ~B.A.S.S.~N.A.F.C.~BoatU.S.~N.R.A.~A.M.A.~ Quote
Btech Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Just got done reading FRESHWATER ANGLERS - Fishing for Catfish. I believe acording to the pictures in the book that would be a Flathead Catfish (Also looks like it was about to spawn if the head was swollen) Channel cats typicaly have a white tummy and have 30+ ribs on the anal fin. If you like catfishing id recomend you check that book out I lerned alot of facts from it. Did you know a catfish has over 5,000 Tastebuds per Square Centimeter? Thats definatly a nice cat man! Congrats - Any idea on the weight? I assume you plan to eat him... Quote
BlakeMolone Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Its definitely a channel not a flathead and thats nice for a channel cat! Good job Quote
coffee Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Both channel and blue catfish have a forked tail, channel catfish tails are forked deeper than blue catfish, but they are both noticeably forked. Flathead catfish have a tail that is quite straight. Flatheads are by far the uglier of the three. Channel catfish have 24-29 rays on the anal fin, the fin has a rounded edge. The blue catfish, however, has 30 or more rays and a straighter edge. Your's looks like a channel cat, but can't say for sure until you check out the anal fin. Good fish. Quote
