zellamander Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 So my Fiance asked me, "why do you have so much stuff for fishing, I've only seen you use a portion of it, and you always use the same stuff. You have all those baits, but when you run out of one, you immediatly order them from BPS or wherever instead of using the other stuff." So has anybody ever heard that one? I'll admit, it's true, I do have a ton of fishing stuff. I have about 15 rods and reels, put about 7 on my boat while tournament fishing, and I have probably 20 stoway boxes full of stuff, I have worm pouches full, and I only use a small portion of it. Why do I do that you ask? Well, I love Berkley, and I can say that I probably own every bait that berkley has on the market, in most color. I use different colors for different conditions, and different styles, for different times in the season. About the rods, I love Quantum, So that is what I own, rods and reels are all Quantum. I don't feel bad about owning as many as I do or putting that many in my boat. Because with that many poles, I can have 7 different rigs at once, and they are only a reach away. So when I see the guy fishing further down the cove having to stop to switch out baits or re rig or something, I know that I'm getting about 5 casts to his 1 cast. I figure the more casts, the more water covered, the more water covered, the more fish. Just wondering if anybody else does the same. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Sounds familiar, one question though. Why are you not hiding your stuff from you fiance. When she is youir wife it will only get worst. I starting hiding my gear from my wife 10 years ago. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 Most of my stuff has never been used. I always test new hardbaits in my pool, but otherwise they have never been wet! If I claimed to use 20% of my tackle, I think that would be an exaggeration. As far as rods and reels go, I try to use all of them occasionally throughout the year, but it's usually only one or two during a day on the water. 8-) Quote
Willzx225 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I believe you are the only one here with that problem Ok Sorry the wife was in the room. You are not alone! My name is Will and I am a tackle junkie. ;D Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 Yes, I hear that type of question. I have a lot of "stuff" and carry a lot of stuff when I fish. Out of the 53 rod and reels I have, I carry 8-20 depending on which boat I am using and the prevalent expected pattern. I am not brand loyal for equipment or baits and may have something of most everything. I go prepared to utilize several presentations at any given moment to maximize the opportunities of being successful. Most days, I figure out a pattern rather quickly and end up only using one or two bait styles and one or two rod/reels most of the day. I replace whatever I may use up so I am prepared for the next outing. I think most efficient fisherpersons do the same. Quote
rondef Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 My wife looks at all of the stuff I buy (I don't hide anything) and always asks why I need to purchase more. I just tell her that new baits come out all the time and I want to make sure I have some for my son and I to fish. I am starting to have a storage problem and will most likely need to buy or build a cabinet to start storing my gear because I only bring and use about 15 to 25% of my gear with me on any given fishing trip. I am constantly rearranging my tackleboxes based on the locations that I fish. Eventually I will have enough to just pack up multiple tackle boxes and then just grap one of them based on where I am going. Quote
moby bass Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I think about 80% of my tackle has been used at least once. Not all my crank and jerk baits have been used. I have a variety of sizes and colors of those but I don't own a boat and it makes it a little harder to fish those. But I have them for the opportunities when I can go out on a boat. I have some duplicate colors of jigs that haven't seen water yet. All of my rods have seen action. I probably don't have nearly as much stuff as some of you guys so it makes it easier to use it. My response to my wife is to remind her that her nephew (avid golfer) doesn't use just one club for the entire round of golf nor does he use every club in his bag on every round. The right tool for the right job. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 My boat never leaves the seawall without at least eight rods and reels, each with something different tied to it. I always bring all my tackle bags just in case. I would hate to get out on the lake and find out that what ever bait they are hitting is sitting at home in the utility room. My wife never says anything about how much tackle I have, because she knows I'll remind her of her fetish for purses, shoes, and watches. It wouldn't matter anyhow, because forty years ago I married a saint. It was her idea to buy the house on the water, and to buy the new boat..........Like I said, she's a saint. Falcon Quote
StuntDouble Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I made an agreement with my wife, I buy tackle she gets scrap booking/knitting/clothes or some other supplies she "needs". We recently foreclosed on our house and live in a horse drawn buggy that my grandparents gave us but you should see all the great stuff we have! JK It keeps us both in check though. Quote
Super User CWB Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 My wife used to fish with me until she said "I Do" Now it's "I Don't" I'm addicted to new stuff that comes out. Way too much time spent on ebay or online buying when I should be selling. Maybe I need an intervention! :-? Quote
Volman482 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I've got 50+ yrs. of tackle and lures in various cubbyholes in my boat and garage, but when I see something new, I just gotta have at least one. detroit1 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 My wife knows about my stuff. She also encouraged me to buy a nicer boat than the one i was going to, plus, she even watches fishing shows with me and understands the "need" of so many rods, lures, etc. that i "require". OOOPS! gotta go.. Quote
HesterIsGod Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 I pride myself on being able to catch bass on every bait in my tacklebox. I am not as great at finding bass, but when I do find them I like the fact that I know virtually every lure in my tackleboxes strenghts and weaknesses, and from there I can apply them to the current situation with confidence. I remember hearing zel rowland say once in a video or article that the one of the big things that seperate a weekend angler and a pro is that the pro uses every lure in his box instead of 4 or 5 favorites.
