Super User retiredbosn Posted January 13, 2009 Super User Posted January 13, 2009 Just curious as to how many people here striper fish. I'm always looking for ideas on how to catch these fish. I "accidently" hooked one a while back and have been addicted ever since. Man those fish have shoulders, they can really stretch a line. I'm wondering how many of you catch them while fishing for LMB, I caught the first one on a Bomber Fat Free shad. I know most people troll live bait, but I really don't have the patience for live bait fishing. I really enjoy feeling like I do something to catch the fish, picking the right lure, right color presentation etc. I've never targeted the striper on purpose but really enjoy the suprise of hooking one while fishing. Any advice on how to fish for them on purpose. Quote
jimmieO Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I've been having that issue a lot lately. I've been throwing white booyah spinnerbaits. I haven't ever purposely caught a striper, but their are plenty of folks that I have run across that are strictly striper fishing. I've watched a group of about 8 boats all within 30 yards of eachother all jump up at the same time (when the stripers start bustint the top of the water chasing shad) and then all sit down at the same time when it cooled off and wait for the next period. The one thing I have noticed is that it seems to be when the sun pokes out from behind the clouds that they really get turned on. Quote
farmpond1 Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I've fished plenty of times but I've never stripped. Not for money, anyway! Sorry, couldn't resist. Clinton Lake which is not too far from my house has stripers and I've trolled for them but never hooked one. I think I might get a planer board sometime to move the baits further from my boat. That might help. I've never seem them bust the surface but I'm not the most observant fellow (or so I'm told) so I'm probably missing something. I certainly wouldn't object to finding some schooling stripers. Quote

Low_Budget_Hooker Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 #1 color sold for Stripers is White/red Quote
bigbaitfisher Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I've caught a few in my day ;D http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1229834639 The above were all caught slow trolling this december. We also cast for them in the spring/summer using baits imitating shad/baitfish. Jigheads and flukes, spoons, swimbaits/swim shad, zara spooks, poppers, rattle traps, etc. are all popular baits here. White/Red seems popular for TOPWATER striper lures. We have A TON more success on white or chartreuse. Depending on which camp you sit in... -If it aint white, it aint right -If it aint chartreuse, it aint no use. Quote
Calcutta Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I dont fish lakes much mostly rivers. I start out trolling up stream casting towards structure ,stumps ,and creek mouths fishing for LMB and spotted bass. On the way home, I troll downstream with a chrome/blue rattle trap. When I catch a striper, I have then found a school of them and I stop and fish there or Ill keep following down stream. A friend of mine showed me this. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 18, 2009 Super User Posted January 18, 2009 A lot of people use tubes(surgical tubing) for stripers and they are very effective, they resemble eels. We use them down here for barracuda. Many tackle stores sell them but I make my own using a 8/0-12/0 limerick hook. I have never caught strippers but we have a lot of northeastern people down here and that is what they all tell me. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 18, 2009 Super User Posted January 18, 2009 I just happen to notice them on Cabela's web site. They call them a "surge " http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0003479312433a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all-perf&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products&QueryText=saltwater+tackle&Nty=1&cm_cat=Google_NonBrand&Ne=2510&Ntt=saltwater+tackle&noImage=0&cm_ven=performics&_requestid=62146&Ntx=matchall&cm_pla=fish_saltwatertackle_general&N=3418&cm_ite=saltwater%20lures&rid=0180101070502&cmCat=perf Cabala's price is absurd, check around, I have bought these for 4-5 bucks. Someday when you do catch a striper youll be hooked for life. Especialy a big one, the fight is beyond what words can describe! Having a heavy rod bend over in the water and almost comming out of your hands is fantastic! Quote
Drewster116 Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Caught this one when I was 16 using 8lb mono and a white atom popper. I released it Quote
Pitchinkid Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 AWESOME PIC AND FISH DREWSTER!. I catch alot of hybrid's on my home water fishing for smallmouth. They are a blast to hook. Sometimes can be a real pain in the butt during a tournament. 5 and 6 pounders are extremely common on the Kanawha river Catch one seems like you will hook up with 3 or 4 more on the next few casts. Fun none the less. Quote
