SimonSays Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I've been hearing alot about using eels for large stripers, what do I need to set up an eel rig? and how do I do it? Trying to go for a big one ;D Thanks! Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted December 13, 2008 Super User Posted December 13, 2008 Not sure of the rig (you could probably Google it) but a guy I work with told me the secret to eels is (I'm not making this up) to whack them on the side of the boat or something hard. This more or less stuns them and prevents them from balling up. If they ball and curl up, they are useless as a bait. Quote
Super User Micro Posted December 13, 2008 Super User Posted December 13, 2008 Use a swivel and about a 24 inch piece of mono leader attached to a big octopus hook. Lip hook the eel on the hook. That's about it. Don't use a real stiff leader. If it's too stiff, the eel will wrap around it. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 6, 2009 Super User Posted January 6, 2009 I was watching Jose Wejebe, "The Spanish Fly" on tv fishing for stripers off Martha Vineyards. As the above post mentioned , they used circle hooks and hooked them thru the upper lip. Then they casted and retrieved as they would with a lure. I have friends down here in Fla that come from that part of the country and they toss surgical tubes for them. We use tubes down here for barracuda. Quote
